Why do People Make
Petitions?
People make
petitions for various reasons. It used to be a formal form of showing either a politician or a person in power that you are attesting to his actions or ruling. Now, you can start to make a petition for the most useless of reasons. For example, you could see several online petitions asking their visitors to sign their online petition so that their favorite rock band would consider having a concert in their town or city. There are many of this type of petition that really holds no value but incredibly, these are the types of petitions that are actually getting more signatures. Perhaps it’s because the relevance of the petition is erroneous, many people don’t hesitate to include their names because it holds no legal value. The more the petition holds true importance, the more people start to think twice first before they start to sign their names. Others start to fear and prefer to leave the petition for others to sign. Anyway, there’s just a need of a majority percentage in terms of the population of people involved so the petition would be considered a success.
However, the true purpose of a petition is for more important concerns. Online
petitions or other forms of petition can be used and all these forms are valid. Online petitioning is becoming very popular because you no longer need to waste time and effort just to gather signatures. You can just send out a group email and direct them to the site for your online petition and they could sign their names there. The more signatures and names on the online petition the more chance for the petition to be recognized.
Petitions can also be published on a newspaper. This is also another common way of sending out your message to the people concerned by exposing it publicly. This is useful especially if your petition is about something that concerns a more general public. Publishing it on the newspaper would allow the people to see the number of signatories and this will also get the attention of the petitionee.
People make
petitions for diverse reasons. The success of a petition depends on different factors but the bottom line is that you need to gather enough signatures and/or names to prove that the petition is supported by the majority of people concerned. If the petition is for a company where employees are the ones appealing, then you would need to gather at least 51% (the more, the better) to show that the petition truly applies for the majority. You have to make sure your petition truly sites the opinions and views of the majority and that the petition is not just for your own selfish views and opinions only.
If this does not give you the result that you need especially if it’s for an issue that needs to be answered right away, there are still other means that you could try so your voice would be heard. Just remember, if you deal with the issue alone, your chance would be slim. But if you deal with the issue as a group, you increase your chances.
