Why Sign a Petition?

There are different ways of expressing yourself and having your voice heard and your views out in the open. Some would just look at a situation and know there is something they can do about it but they are just too busy to even exert a little effort to make some difference in their lives as well as with the lives of others.

Let’s face it. Everybody needs to work in order to survive. With the little amount of time we have left to spend for ourselves and for our loved ones, we don’t have enough time to spare thinking about what we could do in order for our community to prosper and thrive. A single person can only do so much and for you to make such a big difference and make good changes, you would need to dedicate your life into reforming what you think is right. Of course, not everyone can do that and not too many are willing. For this reason, petitions make sense. Why? Because people only need to sign their names and they would have already exerted an effort to make some difference. Combined, all the signatures gathered would make such an impact that it can even put a powerful man out of office. Democracy, power of speech, majority votes, all these are enough to make even a rock move from its place.

So, if you are still asking yourself if your signature would actually make such a difference, then you probably don’t have a clue what a petition can actually do. Sure, it’s just made of paper but it represents what the majority wants and needs. The effectiveness of the petition lies on the number of signature it has. If you belong to an organization and this organization is the one that is affected by a decision or ruling of an authority, as long as you get the majority of the organization then your petition already has the power to make the person or persons to whom the petition is addressed to make the necessary changes needed to confirm to what the petitioners are requesting.

The effect of a petition can be undermined by different factors as well. But, a petition is a great start to make those authorized know that the ones who’d be most affected have all joined hands and acted together against what is stated in the petition.

If you won’t spend time to sign your name in the petition, thinking that perhaps your signature won’t make a difference, think again. What if other people think the same way you do? Just imagine how many signatures would be lost just because people think their signatures won’t make such a difference. The fact is, each signature counts and when you decide to sign the petition, you are actually helping your group or the society get the results needed for the betterment of everyone.

Next time you are asked to sign a petition, read through what is being stated on the petition itself and think for yourself, are you agreeing to the purpose of the petition? If so, you better sign it and help make the right change.
