Things to consider when signing a petition

A petition is a legal document and it should be read carefully before you decide to sign it. You don’t want to regret participating in a group effort where the purpose is actually pretty selfish. You must know what the petition is really intended for and to whom it is addressed to. You must really be a firm believer of the petition’s purpose if you decide to sign it. If you are not yet convinced, then you must not sign.

There are things you need to consider before signing a petition. These are important considerations because you are entering a legal battle between the community and the people in authority. A petition is like a community effort of having their voice heard loud and clear without any bloodshed or tears.

So, what do you need to consider when signing a petition?

First, you must check its purpose. Is the petition intended for the betterment of everyone or is it intended just for the heck of it? You must weigh things first and consider why the people in authority decided or created something that the petitioners are totally against. If the petition is not against what the people in authority did or ruled for and may be asking for something that a person in authority should do then you must also think whether or not it is really necessary. For example, if the petition is seeking the government to build an amphitheatre because there are no amphitheatres yet in your locality, you must think first whether or not it is really necessary to have an amphitheatre and if your local government has the budget for it.

Second, you must check the motives. Sure, there is a genuine purpose for the petition but you must also ask yourself if there is a hidden motive behind the petition. Is the person who created the petition asking people to help him make his own ambitions come true? Is the petition being used by him so he could get the right publicity that he may use in the end for his own benefits? It’s really up to you whether or not you’d help him but you have to make sure your signature will make a good change and not make a negative impact in the long run.

Lastly, you must also consider whether or not you are really a believer of the petition’s purpose. This is necessary because you should not sign a petition or other form of legal documents half-heartedly. You must be a firm believer of it so you won’t end up regretting your decision to sign. Once you signed it, you can’t go back and erase your name so you must not look back and wish you haven’t done what you did.

Petitions are important because it gives us the chance to voice out our concerns so that the government or people in authority would know that their people are actually in protest to their decisions or with their actions. There’s no need to protest on the streets just to be heard. A petition will do that for you.
