Starting an Animal Rights Petition
Environmental issues are very important to many of us. To some of us, the environment is the number one cause in this world to fight for. After all, without the environment, there wouldn't even be a world for us to fight for!
Species of all types are now becoming extinct more rapidly than ever before. Global warming is causing a lot of problems throughout the world. Whether you believe global warming is man made or not, it's still a big problem. Animals are getting abused, slaughtered, and skinned alive everyday for a number of selfish reasons. A lot of people don't even take good care of their own pets. Trees are being cut down in even the remotest areas. Baby seals are still clubbed to death in Canada and, dolphins are still murdered in Japan. Dog fighting is still a big problem in the United States, and we can only hope others learn from Michael Vick's mistakes.
Even just thinking about these things makes a lot of people sick to their stomach. People often wonder what they can do to help. Thanks to our freedom of speech and our rights to protest, there is plenty we can do to help get word out about the atrocities done to animals and the environment.
There are hundreds of
petitions out there for people to sign who are concerned about the environment and animal rights.
Online petitions are especially popular thanks to the Internet. If you do a search in Google for "environment petitions", you'll bring up over 3,000,000 results! A search for "animal rights petitions" will bring up over half a million results. That is obviously a proof that many people care about animals and the environment.
One popular online petition site, Petition Spot, has literally thousands upon thousands of petitions concerning the environment. In fact, environmental petitions are so popular, Petition Spot has given them their very own category! There you can find petitions fighting against animal cruelty, animal fur, animal testing, horse slaughter, wolf slaughter, and more. There are also petitions speaking out against pollution, oil drilling, filthy water and parks, and more.
Online petitions are popular because people sometimes feel helpless that they can't go out there and actively fight for specific causes. We wish we can go out there and do something to actually protect animals and the environment, but we don't usually have any resources to do so. Thankfully, we can contribute to the cause just by sitting here in front of our computer. We can sign our name to every environmental petition we can find in order to help out. It may not sound like much, but every little thing we do helps. If every person who feels the slightest bit of concern for animals and the environment sat down and signed our names to online
petitions, we can be of great help.
We also have a right to
start our own petitions as well. The more people who
start petitions, the easier it will be on getting the word out. Think about animal rights organizations like PETA, while their tactics are controversial, they do work. They have saved a lot of animals over the years by using strange tactics that encourage people to sign petitions. If everyone who is concerned about animal rights uses the same tactics as them, think about how many animals we can save!
Even if we don't all have the money to promote our
petitions nationwide or even worldwide, there are still ways we can bring attention to it. For starters, just as I mentioned, controversy always seems to help. Try making your petition stand out, so that it will generate a lot of attention and interest. Write it in a way that makes it both meaningful and interesting; try a little controversy if you're feeling brave enough.
There are sample letters, forms, and petitions for you to read at Petition Spot. You can get an idea of not only what to write, but the proper layout in which to write it as well. I'm sure you understand the importance of proper spelling and grammar. Don't go making any typos, either. Have a friend or family member proofread your petition letter for you. Ask them if your letter content is interesting and thought-provoking. Will it make everyone who reads it stop and think for a moment? Will they find it boring? Remember, the goal here is to generate interest, not to bore people.
If everyone you show your petition letter too agrees that it's interesting, then it's time to promote it for signatures. Contact your local politicians and ask them how many signatures you should need for it in order for it to become successful. Upload a copy of it on the Internet to a place like Petition Spot. You can easily promote it from there. Try visiting animal rights and environmental issues forums to talk about the cause. Inform others of your petition, and have them sign it. Don't be shy about asking online animal rights groups and organizations if they will be kind enough to promote your petition. Ask for a link to your petition through their websites.
Another thing you can do is offline promotion. Print off flyers explaining why animal rights and the environment are so important. Have the url to your petition written on every single flyer. Go around your area and hand them out. Hang them at your local stores and supermarkets as well. You should also contact your local news stations, radio stations, and newspapers to ask if they'll advertise your petition. Anything you can possibly imagine to do in order to promote your petition, you should try doing it.
The more interesting and thought-provoking the content on the petition is, the quicker it will spread around. If news about your petition gets around by word of mouth, it will make your own efforts to promote it a lot easier. Since animal rights issues and the environment are causes that many people truly care about, you shouldn't have a lot of trouble getting the needed signatures. If you've written it in the manner I described, and if you can successfully promote it, you can get enough signatures to help make the world a cleaner and safer place for all creatures.
