This petition brings an important point up to the citizens of Waterloo, Indiana. I live at one of the busiest intersections in our small community. In the past year, I have seen my share of senseless accidents that could have been avoided if there were 2 more stop signs. The highly traveled State Road 427, intersects with County Road 35 (Center Street) on the South West Side of Waterloo. There is a small mobile home community, a funeral home and a church that occupy three of the corners. The only driveway to the mobile home community is approximately 30' from this busy intersection. When traveling South from Waterloo, and needing to turn in to the mobile home community, you are not able to give ample notice to the vehicles behind you. If there is a vehicle traveling South on Center street and you signal before arriving at the intersection, often the Center street vehicle thinks you are turning onto Center street and they will proceed into the intersection. However, if you wait until you are past the intersection to signal your turn, there is not enough time for the vehicles behind you to slow down, which causes another set of problems including; road rage, near miss accidents and endangering pedestrians. The front of the mobile home community boasts a large parking area which is used as a place for children to ride scooters, bikes or play ball. It is extremely unsafe for children to play in this area at times. If there was to be a horrific, or multi-car accident at the intersection, there is a very good possibility that vehicle(s) and/or people could be thrown into the area where my and other children play, thus endangering them as well. Two other factors to consider is that the DeKalb County E.M.S. travels Co. Rd. 35 many times a month. If a 4-way stop was installed, the emergency personell would have an easier and safer way to travel down, across and onto the roads at that intersection. The other factor is that the elementary school bus picks up kids in the early morning hours for school, in front of the mobile home community. There have been MANY occassions in which the bus was completely stopped with stop arm out and flashers going, in which cars have driven right through. If a 4-way stop was there, the vehicles would need to be slowing to stop and thus would have a better chance recognizing the bus was there, and would stop for it as well. I have no doubts that the accident rates would drop, I would feel more comfortable letting me children play (supervised) in the only area they have and our children would be safer when entering the bus in the morning. Please impliment the process to get 2 stop signs installed at this intersection for the safety of our citizens, families, and children. Thank You!
