47 yrs in prison for being asleep in bed!

Rick Federmann was a drug addict. He was attending help clinics and was generally a good guy.
He had never been in trouble in his life before.
He attended a help clinic one day and hooked up with a couple of friends.

One of his friends asked him for a hit of drugs. He gave her some of his stash that he had recently purchased from his dealer.

Later that night - while Rick was home asleep in bed - his friend sadly overdosed in her home and died. Her father found her dead the following day.

She died of her own doing - she was an adult, made her own choices, she injected herself with the drug and consequently died.

Rick - because he had given her the drug when she had asked for it - was charged and convicted of her murder. Although he only gave her the substance - he didn't inject her and wasn't even present when she injected herself OR when she died - however, he was still convicted of her murder.

He received 47 years in a maximum security prison although he never had any previous convictions or prior criminal record. He was 21 years old at time of conviction.

The actual drug dealer was convicted and is serving a much lesser sentence in a far less severe prison establishment.

How can someone be convicted of murder when they did nothing? If this is a safe conviction, then no-one is safe.

If someone has a car accident and someone is killed - are YOU liable because you sold the car? How about the petrol attendant who sold the fuel? The car couldn't run without fuel and there fore couldn't have killed someone in an accident.

This is justice gone mad. It is SO wrong for a person to be locked away (at tax payers expense) for giving someone (a known drug addict) some drug when they asked for it. She was an adult and knew what she was doing. Furthermore, the drug itself would never have harmed her if she hadn't have chosen to take the steps that she did. It was HER choice and she died as a result of her own actions.

So why is Rick in prison for 47 years when he was tucked up in bed miles away at the time of the unfortunate girl's death?
