We, alumni, financial supporters, students, fans, academic colleagues, Catholics, Christians, and concerned citizens, support your invitation to President Obama to give the commencement address this year. We think it is a great privilege and honor that he has accepted your invitation. During his short time in office, he has pushed forward a stimulus package that will increase support for poor mothers and their families, including funding for childcare, health insurance, after-school programs, education, and school lunch programs. He has abolished the use of torture by the United States and has created a plan to end the war in Iraq. These actions are consistent with Catholic social teaching and should be recognized and applauded. On issues where we disagree with our President’s policy, we gain more credibility by focusing on our common ground, and then, discussing our differences as people of goodwill.

We respect our nation's ability to choose its leaders through a fair, open, and democratic process, and we highly respect the office of president. We understand that the University of Notre Dame successfully teaches its students to think for themselves and make their own conclusions about their faith and its role in public life. We also believe that encouraging open dialogue and respect for others with opposing views, rather than boycotting and vilifying them, is more consistent with the teachings of Jesus and the Catholic Church.

We strongly recommend that you ignore any requests to retract your invitation. We believe that such a retraction would dishonor Notre Dame, our nation’s democratic process, Catholic Christianity, academia, and our President.
