The city needs to look at both short- and long-term solutions to the downtown drug problem. First, a more active police presence on the Mall and 7th Ave would be great — there isn't the presence there that there used to be. But long-term solutions including "safe" areas and different criminal charges for dangerous and non-dangerous drugs (I'm sure a number of members of City Council know firsthand whereof I write) are absolutely necessary.
