every week terrible stories appear in our newspapers and news stations stories of horrific torture neglect and death for innocent cats dogs and other animals

the public responds with petitons letters to the newspaper and public meetings but the crimanals who deliberately abuse animals seldom get charged and rarely recieve more punishment than a fine they cant even be banned from owning animals for more then 6 months

recent studies in the us and uk have showed a disturbing trend animal crulity is a warning sign that the person who did it particulary a child could be involved in other violent crimes and pose a risk to others around them

in March 2001 the federal justice minister introduced bill C-15 a new law that would update the canadian criminal code with regard to animal crulity

the punishment would be harsher for anybody convicted of commiting acts of crulity to animals they would face up to 5 years in prison and a ban for owing animals for life and up intill there trial they will not be allowed contact with an animal

people who are cruel to animals know that they can get away with it stronger laws will be an important deterrent to animal abuse

despite the horrifiying stories and overwhelming public support for new laws some federal politicians have worked to block this bill

in face canadian allience and progressive conservative parties threatned a filibuster in the house of commons to keep the law from passing

they claim falsely that the law will keep farmer from branding the cattles and fisermen from using live bait

thats not true this legislation permits accepted animal industry practises to continue so that means you can fish and brand you cattle and yes you can still hunt durning season though

the outcome of this political gamesmanship is that innocent animals continue to be tortured and killed and there killers are going unpunished

its time for us to speak up for them because they cant speak up for themselfs we need to let our representatives know that enough is enough that this law is important and that this isnt the time to play political games
