Absolutely outrageous. My sister in London caught wind of the news and is a guttted as I am at the prosepct of Affleck's going. Everyone's getting fed up of losing Manchester cultural idenntity to the building of yet more flats. Manchester's FULL...bog off and build up some other city!
Afflecks is the only reason i can still afford/want to go shopping in Manchester - I travel 150 miles for it!! Its a MEGA part of Manc history and should not close to make way for more flats normal people can't afford. KEEP IT OPEN!!!
Afflecks might not quite be the place it was when I first stumbled across it so many years ago, but to close it for flats is absolutely insane - keep Afflecks open!
keep afflecks alive!! No double rent, this is just a way of prolonging the inevitable by forcing people out of business. Leave afflecks alone, I've grown up with it and would be very sad to see it go. Afflecks is a wonderful antidote to faceless souless shopping such as Primark. You can get something tru
Many happy memories wandering round there as a student..was amazed that such a cool place existed on my first visit, not many places like it in the country..
You can't close Afflecks! It's one of the main reasons loadsa alternative ppl go to manchester! The variety of stalls, cafe's etc! theres something different on every floor! without it, I doubt many alternative kids would go to manchester anymore =[
You would be taking away the very heart and soul of Manchester! Lose Afflecks, and you lose culture, diversity, adolescence, ultimately an amazing alternative to the mundane experience that Manchester offers in the way of the Arndale centre. Afflecks has attitude and enigmatic appeal that no other place in Manchester could possibly hope to compete with. The fact that it has propelled so many small businesses into the world of commerce goes to show that humble beginnings mean everything! Do not for everyone's sake, close it down. It deserves better treatment than this for all the good that has come out of it. Make the wise and only decision, to keep Afflecks Palace alive and well in the state of Manchester.
In my memories and featuring in my current plans. How can this brilliant, independent and cultural part of Manchester be replaced with more boring flats?
It would be a huge mistake to close afflecks palace, as it is the best place in manchester for alternative shopping. All alternative needs are catered for. I'm still gutted about the collusseum shutting down, it would be a travesty to shut down afflecks as well!!
Afflecks is an institution in Manchester. I remember my sister first taking me about 20 years ago and I was amazed at the diversity. There's already enough (vacant) new flats in Manchester which aren't selling.
i support the little people, people trying to make a life forthemsleves without being an employee of the big boys.... three cheers to the ontropanur in us all
This place is an institution, manchester like london is being killed by large chains of crap stores you can find in any city! Afflecks is a jewel in the crown of Manchester and i demand its not sold off to be turned into bloody flats where knobheads with too much money and no sense live! Manchester is being turned into flat city where anything original is closed down, turned into flats, offices or chain store clone cities, keep Manchester original because right now its on its way to being London mark2 by a council thats only intrested in money not originality. where will all the kids go on the scene, its a meeting point, a place to make friends, a place to shop, its a lifestyle and a scene institution thats given birth to original shops selling oroginal and unique clothes and goods! keep it open even if the building has to be bought out, lets all buy it to save it!
I think this is all a non-story to be honest. Poor communication with Bruntwood on the part of aflecks managers and scare mongering from the MEN. Many buildings are under contract. Contracts have to expire. They are renewed. End of! Still, might as well sign it anyway.
This is part of history, it would be like pulling down the trevi fountain rome, sears tower in chicago or nelsons column - it is ridculous. I dont want or need a star bucks or another load of crap clothes shops and manchester doesnt need any more flats --- it's madness
