The people who want to sell off Affleck’s Palace are the scum of the earth! As a person who works in the Northern Quarter and also a person that has grown up enjoying the creative freedom of Affleck’s Palace I am disgusted in the fact that this may ever happen, Unfortunately no matter how much we sign this petition or protest outside the building the corporate scum will still get their way. On the 15th June 96, the IRA allegedly set off the biggest bomb on British soil. Coincidently the bomb soon became a catalyst for Manchester City Council to regenerate the whole 50,000 square feet area, destroying many buildings, one being the old Corn Exchange, built in 1903. The Corn Exchange, like Affleck’s was an emporium of small stalls oozing with individuality. Now it has been ‘Regenerated’ into a disgusting temple of consumerism that is the Triangle centre. People of Manchester spread the word and stand up when you are needed and don’t let these people take over something that is so precious to us!!!! Peace Yo!
omg you cannot close Afflecks palace down..No way.It is like the best local place we can get clothes to express out individuality..Please please don't shut it down a lot of people will be devostated
Afflex adds so much charactor to Manchester, and if we all loose it, then Manchester will have nothing original. If they tear down Afflex, then they will tear down a place in every mancunian, because we all love afflex as it is such a strong part of our city and our culture! KEEP AFFLEX!!!!!!!!
what the hell, afflecks is a alternative world, we dont want another GAP, SHOE LOCKER OR any other store like that . individuality is what makes us people not clones
it is the heart of manchester for all the random things you need and some class gear you cant close it cus there wudnt be anythin different about shoppin in manchester than any other city if you do
Removing AP would be the smae for London if Tower Bridge or the houses of parliament were removed, its all about identity and AP is a focal point of this to Manchester, they also sell a lot of nice floral dresses!
Absolutely ridiculous to even consider closing such an integral part of manchesters shopping and social experience. And thats exacxtly what it is, an experience, something that separates us from any other city-the uniqueness of it all. Please don't close it.
They can't close one of the few truly original places left in a major city to make way for yet another, bland, boring, faceless corporate monstrosity! This will take away a vital part of Manchester and only give it back something dull, unwanted and unneeded.
Closing Afflecks will be a cultural blow and will mean that our children will now be inspried by corporate giants instead of being able to explore their creativity through their identity.
Affecks has been at the forefront of some major turning points in my life, as i'm sure it has for many other people. Closing it would be devestating on the youth Manchester is currentyhome to, where else is there such a place as afflecks palace in Manchester. Unique.
Afflecks Palace is one of the VERY FEW places left where people can follow the dream of owning and running their own shop or starting their own business this is impossible for them to do on the high street because it is too expensive for a beginner to set up there without a lottery win. Not all or even a lot of these small businesses succeed in Afflecks, but it really is the only opportunity for these people to try. For them to try takes a lot of courage on their part.
If Afflecks is closed we are that step closer to the town centre shopping experience being narrowed down to Primark, Primark or Primark.
Afflecks palace has been the social doorway for 1000's of kids in manchester. i met some of my best friends on those stair ways, not to mention the amazing variety of retail on offer. lets not see "the world famous affleck palace" turn into trendy flats for rich kids.PLEASE.
The potential closure of Afflecks is yet another example of cultural erosion- i.e. the eradication of any form of culture which does not conform to the government's standards and expectations. We are fast on our way to becoming a robotic, lifeless society; a culture built on mediocrity. This should not be allowed to happen. Manchester is fast becoming a victim of its own success and losing its character as everywhere that HAS any character is shut down to make way for new apartments, office space or supermarkets- as if we need any more. What are open-top coach tours gonna be like in 10 years time? "To my left you can see- more office space! To my right you can see- some more city apartments! As we turn the corner into this street, you can see- some more office space!" Don't allow this to happen- keep Afflecks open and respect the rights of people to follow their own way of life and not one dictated by false conceptions of 'normality'.
As someone else said somewhere else, "Afflecks Palace is the heart and soul of the Northern Quarter" and it needs to carry on being so for many years to come.
You can't shut Afflecks Palace as it is my boyfriend's favourite place. There will be no where to shop on saturdays and it will never be the same again....
You can not close Afflecks it is part of our culture where would we go for our individual madcap fashion needs! Please don't do this it's criminal!!!!!!!
WTF?!?! Afflecks shutting? Where are we supposed to go then? There's no other non-chav dwelling we can go to. I've had some good times with that place.
Affecks has always steeped Manchester in coolness. It gave lefties a sense of individualism and inspiration during the years when Thatcher ruled and desicrated the city. It's in much need of some TLC but given some backing it could put the flavour back into Manchester.
Afflecks is one of very few places in Manchester that still holds some sort of magic it changes so many young people and it is a box of hidden delights to young and old alike...it made me who I am
I support this, however, Manchester Council is famous for allowing much greater icons of the city being closed and redeveloped, just look at the hacienda and the terrible flats they've built there now instead. History, culture and innovation all lost. Aflecks has gone down hill a bit over the past few years, but give it time to recover, it may still happen.
Afflecks is cultural reference point for many young people past and present. It is an infamous landmark in terms of alternative culture as was Quiggins in Liverpool and Carnaby Street in London. I do believe that as well as the loss of such an insitution will affect of lot of people I also believe that it could be damning to small businesses imapcting economic growth for independant businesses. If it is closed Afflecks will be sadly missed.
It would be a gargantuan loss. Affleck's Palace is an iconic place that's served Manchester's alternative generations for over a quarter of a century. To strip Manchester of it, like the Hacienda, is criminal. Would you really want another Deansgate Locks eating away at the core of the Northern Quarter?
For years as a young 'un I'd been told about Afflecks by my sister. And since 2004 I've been going on a semi-regular basis. I love to just lose myself in the place, there's always something new and interesting to see...for it to be lost, well, a chunk of what makes Manchester a great place to go will disappear for good.
Afflecks is one of the only individual shops going .. sure its over priced but still it encourages people to be individuals and be themselves instead of followin all those trends that other people follow .. its good for use young folk to have something like that ... so leave it alone!
Wow...I like grew up there...eating giant baked potatoes and drinking hot chocolates covered in cream and marshmallows upstairs back in the day.
Of course the corn exchange was better...but that blew up
afflecks is the only place in manchester where the likes of me can go and buy alternate gear, and is a very important part of the lives of literally thousands of rockers from the ages of 14 to 40, and to close it will be as a death knell to manchesters supposedly diverse culture!
This is the reason why I shop in Manc!!!! If I wanted all the high street store gear, I'd just go to the Trafford centre and not even bother going into town. Closing Affleck's would be another nail in the coffin for city centre shopping.
