it shouold stay open b coz its a place were people can be there selves and help them selves been seen and heard and if it were to close everyone would have no support network...(except chavs.. :S) :D
There is no need for this closure, i am new to manc land and see the decision as an unfair tease to take such a beautiful place away when its only been in my life a couple of months. Not impressed
Afflecks should stay open because it's the core of Manchester life. Teenagers, young and old flock there every day to spend money on good items not found anywhere else. Take Afflecks away and Manchester's economy will suffer.
affleck cannot close, it is an important aspect of the mancunian culture and generations of people should be able to visit it and have the same enjoyable experiences most people get from being part of this unique store
it will be a sad day for mancunia if this places closes, first the hacienda, then boddingtons and now this. We cant let these local legends keep vanishing! PS Bruntwood - shame on you. Walsh - pull ur bloody finger out.
You CAN'T!! I for one have been going there since I was 13, I got all my piercings from there, I created my own sense of style with the alternative fashions and I hung out in the cafe drinking cola with my mates! It made me and many others who were are today, INDIVIDUAL! Forget your trendy bars, your modern flats and mounds of modern architectural concrete rubbish...some things need to stay as they are!!
It would be a great shame if Afflecks closed down, both for the traders, customers and the city of Manchester. In light of recent debates about 'clone towns' we don't want to head towards Manchester being a 'clone city'
Afflecks Palace is a Mancunian institution and a massive part of our City's culture. Please do not replace it with more identical uninspiring apartments, Manchester has enough of them... but there is only one Afflecks Palace!
Lets not make Manchester another boring corporate city lets leave it with some character and dignity, if you close this place where have the kids got to shop that is unique and interesting.
Afflecks Palace is one of the most iconic locations in the heart of the city centre. Don't turn Manchester into another generic city, bereft of identity and soul. If Afflecks dies, the spirit of the Northern Quarter dies also. Keep Afflecks alive.
This establishment is the heart of the northern quarter. People come from far and wide to come here. I don't think people will understand how influential this place was until it has gone....
If Afflecks is shut then so much business will be lost. It's one of the only decent places for 'alternative' shopping and people don't realise just how much business it brings! When I was in college/school we used to get the train for 2 hours to Manchester, just to go to Afflecks. It's a brilliant shopping experience and so many jobs will be lost if it is shut.
Afflecks, like so many have said before me, is an important part of the city. it gives Manchester a certain character. not just because of he cientele, the stalls, or what it actually sells. But the building itself also. it is a colourful vibrant and interesting building with so much history. Also the actual experience of afflecks is like a social gathering. A place where many people can be themselves. whether your into punk, metal, goth, rave, danc e,hip hop,or whatever. a place where individuals can be individuals. and to be a part of that is amazing. i would rather be a part of this colourful eclectic group of people then another estate owner with pockets lined with gold. It will be a real shame to see it go. Also on top of all this you will be forcing many business out of business. where they cant set up shops so cheaply again. They will be forced to destroy what they dream. where will they go???? Also you may single handedley killed the northern quarter, for afflecks, not to be melodramtic, IS the northern quarter.
Afflecks is an original plae like no other. To close it down when it is loved by so many all over the country is stupidly insane. Please can someone see sense. Not only is it a great place for customers wanting something that little bit diffrent but its also a great place for small bussiness to start. Don't take away a historic and adored piece of Manchester.
Afflecks is a unique place in Manchester, and a massive part of the Northern Quarter. It is the sole reason many people come into Manchester at all. To close it would be a crime. If anyone remembers the Corn Exchange, back in the day before it was turned into the bland, corporate Traingle, it was a thriving place for little alternative shops, it was great. But that has gone, and now Afflecks will to, it is just so depressing how the council don't care about the youth culture in Manchester
the council and bruntwood will regret it when the thousands of people who go to afflecks stop visitng the city centre and hundreds of other businesses suffer because of it. The loss of visitors to the city centre could kick start a reversal of all the inward investment manchester has received over the last 12 years, making the apartments or whatever they intend to turn it into completely redundant anyway as no one will want to live here.
afflecks the northern quarter are some of the only things left in manchester keeping the culture alive - we don't want or need to become another london!they've already torn down the colloseum to turn it into flats, don't let the same thing happen here =[
i challange any1 to name another place where there is a killer poster collection, clothes with built in spekers, the brightest hair dye i have ever sceen and cow boy stuff . it has an ace sweet shop and what other place has all of this and rubber ducks in the wall and such a welcoming vibe all these highstreet stores as soon as you walk in they want you out plus i can actually afford the stuff the sell NAME ONE GOOD REASON WHY IT SHOULD BE SHUT
Afflecks is not only just a shop, but a social meeting place and a place where kids can buy all the things they need to keep their individuality. It's great for young people like myself.
Dont shut afflecks!! ive lived in manchester all my life and its one of the only good places there! manchester needs the alternative and they would be stupid to close it!!!
I first visited Afflecks palace at the age of 13 with friends from school. The place has always been a great place where people have felt welcome whatever their cultural values, and although Manchesters culturally diverse nature will still remain if it goes, to lose Afflecks Palace would be such a shame for the current generation of shoppers and those of the future. A re-think is in order. I think that in the future these smaller creative businesses will become the basis for modern shopping as oppossed to alot of the bigger chain shops. If Afflecks goes they will be losing out on alot of trade for the future, but hopefully the shops will stick around in the Northern Quarter for years to come.
Don't let Manchester turn into a faceless metropolis exclusivley for the rich and famous, Afflecks is a piece of Mancunian history, they've had the Hacienda (with their underhand dealings) don't let them have this
I'm a student at Salford University and have lived in Manchester for four years. I love Afflecks Palace and was really saddened when i learned that it might close. A few years ago a similar shop called the Pink Parrot in St. Ann's square and the Trafford center closed. In its place we got a mobile phone shop. So something small and unique and beautiful was replaced by something uniform and ubiquitous. I would hate that top happen again. Save Afflecks palace because it is fast becoming a diamond in a sea of zircons.
I am 40 years old and still pay a visit to Afflecks when in the city centre, as has been my custom for over 20 years, sometimes just to go there specifically. If the city council allow this place to close then more the fools them. The so called 'fashionable Northern quarter' would have the very heart ripped out of it.Appartments are 'fashionable' also, but who goes to the city centre to see THEM, not me!
look at 6803. they came from canada to shop there.thats why we need to keep it open. 25 years heritage. and a major cultuural thing in our city.heck, my dad went there when he was young, and hes oldddd.keep afflecks open. i but loadsa stuff from there!
This is the heart of manchester, And many famous people have enjoyed the palace, so why arent theycoming back to hel save it? So many big names in rock support and shop at the place.
The strange thing about Manchester, unlike other citires (I will not call it a great city no more, because it doesn't warrent it), is that it in no way, protects that most valuable commodity - culture. Yes we get a the razmataz about how diverse and cultural Manchester is, but the fact is it isn't. The council as no interest in preserving our heritage, our culture or our history. The only time this Council is interested is when fashion dictates. Fellow Mancunians since the 1700s have dictated taste and fashion. Labour Council in 2008 and for many years before have sold us all out.
We only need to look at the most dispicable and calous handling of Piccadilly Gardens. The Council objective was to run the park into the ground so it would have little or no objection to the selling off of land GIVEN to the people of Manchester. If that's the type of people who run our city, how can we blame Bruntwood, how can we blame the inept Council when they let Tesco and Asda have free rain over our city to blight as many communities as they choose fit for their purpose. How can we blame any of them. We have let this Council in, which in turn as sold our city off to the highest bidder.
Regeneration doesn't work, look at the devestation it as caused in communities, which only the 30 years ago went through the same! No one as mentioned how much it all costs to the tax payer, in both the pocket and mentally and physically.
So why should we save Afflecks Palace, when we have already lost so much, which the powers at be have deemed more profitable to demolition or turn into yet flats.
I don't see how we can object to Afflecks Palace to being either demolished or turned into flats.
We and Manchester City council are only interested in ourselves, money and personal gain, so why should we want to save this hub of creativity.
It's from a bygone era when Manchester was creative and supported endeavour and people with new ideas. Gone are th
