Whether students should be required to leave their backpacks in their lockers during the day has become a much-debated issue at Nesaquake Middle School.

For the most part, student involvement in policy-making is not the customary way of doing things, but in this instance we are seeking to give the student body some input.

This petition is a pro-active way of tackling the issue and a way of having the sentiment of the entire student body addressed.

A couple of students arranged for this petition expressing their objections to a policy on backpacks to make sure that they have more of a say against it and why.

``The more people who sign this, the more they'll realize this might not work,''

We are seeking a hearing now and want to have administrators, including the superintendent, meet with students.

``That way they would get a really good view of what students want,'' he said. ``We could lay it on the table and maybe compromise.''

One of our concerns is the time involved in getting books from the lockers. ``I don't want to have to walk to the other end of the school to get things,'' one student said.

Some students carry things in their backpack that may be stolen easily if left in the locker.

Female students have other concerns. ``We have private stuff in it. I have my lip gloss and other things,''.


Some students say they fear if the school gives them more time to go to their lockers before classes, they may shorten the lunch period.






Backpacks keep books together. ``It's easier to step over a backpack than maneuver over piles of books.''
