To: The Mayor and City Council of the City of Calgary, AB

We, the undersigned, as citizens, residents, employees, consumers, and visitors of the City of Calgary, demand free motorcycle and motor scooter parking at all parking lots and parking facilities owned by the City of Calgary, including but not limited to, designated street parking locations within the City of Calgary.

The popularity of motorcycles as a daily form of transportation is skyrocketing. With the substantial increase in gasoline prices, traffic, and congestion- many drivers are leaving their cars and SUV’s at home in favor of a motorcycle as a primary mode of transportation.

Motorcycles reduce pollution, reduce traffic congestion, reduce parking congestion, and reduce roadway wear and tear. All this results in lower costs to the City of Calgary for roadway repair and maintenance, reduces the need for new roadways, and reduces the need for large parking lots and parking structures – land which could instead be used for more shops and restaurants, parks and green space, or child recreation areas.

We the undersigned demand the creation of free off street motorcycle parking in all public parking lots.

We further demand that the City of Calgary create free on-street motorcycle parking, utilizing locations that are currently designated as no parking zones, indicated with NO Parking signs simply because there is no room for a full automobile parking space, or in-between currently marked metered zones.

By utilizing these otherwise unusable parking areas, the City can effectively increase the number of parking spaces downtown without cost, or at the expense of metered spaces, and can accomplish this without reducing any current on-street automobile parking spaces. More parking means more people patronizing area shops and businesses and bringing more consumers and businesses into our downtown areas.
There are many cities around the world utilizing these concepts and offer free motorcycle parking, including the City of Toronto. The 25 percent discount for motorcycle parking offered by the City of Calgary is an absolute disgrace with no consideration for the positive aspects/results mentioned above.
In addition, we ask that the City of Calgary take the following into consideration:
All parking lots and facilities with designated motorcycle parking spaces should be located in close proximity to and easily visible to parking attendants or security personnel. Where motorcycle parking can not be reasonably located in immediate proximity to parking or security personnel, such as the case with most on-street parking, a metal post or other securing device should be placed to allow the motorcycle to be chained or locked.

We, the undersigned, petition the City of Calgary with this demand for the designation and allowance of free on and off street motorcycle parking utilizing zones currently designated as “no parking” for no other reason except due to size limitations in all public parking lots.
Sincerely,

Undersignee

It's a shame to see so many people driving solo in their SUVs and cars to work each day, while there's constant talk of global warming all over the news. Since motorcycles burn a fraction of the fuel compared to these larger vehicles, it only makes sense to promote more environmentally friendly methods of transportation such as this. I'd really like to see this city make some decisions that help reduce emissions of greenhouse gases to help save the environment.

340 17 Jul 2008 - 15:26    Joe Chang : "Protecting Calgary's environment is important to all Calgarians. The City of Calgary is committed to being a leader in responsible environmental stewardship and encourages all citizens to do their part." This is a quote from the City of Calgary's website on the environment. If the city is truly committed to being a leader then they should be "leading" the way. The best way to show support and encourage its citizens to be smart on travel and reduce environmental impact is to use transportation with a low carbon footprint. I haven't done any formal study but outside of a self-propelled bicycle a motorcycle or moped is the next best mode of transportation. The city should be providing alternate parking specifically for motorcycles and mopeds either for free or for very low rates. To offset the cost advertising space in the form of billboards and other means can be erected in the space. You will see a mindset shift and Calgary citizens will see that motorcycles are a viable alternative and can also do their part in helping the environment. Remember, it's good leadership that people follow.

This city should endeavor to put bikes everywhere they'll fit. Last week a ticket found it's way onto nearly every motorcycle in the downtown core. When did this city become so blatantly anti-motorcycle? We can't all drive hummers you know.
