Support CHANGE in WI Domestic Violence Statutes!
Published March 29, 2011
In the state of WI, there are currently Statutes in effect that do not protect victims of Domestic Violence. The current Statute of Limitations on Domestic Violence crimes only allow a 28 day reporting period for the victims. This means that if a man, woman or child is abused by someone that they live with, they cannot report it to police if it has been greater than 28 days since the last physical attack took place. We are asking for a reform of these laws to be comparable to what the Statutes state for the same crimes had they not been committed in a \"Domestic\" setting. I.E. Attempted Murder carries a State Statute of Limitations of 3 years to report in a \"Non-Domestic\" setting. In the state of WI, currently even Attempted Murder is only reportable within 28 days if it occurs in a \"Domestic\" setting.

\"Domestic\" as it is used in this context means that the parties involved in the crime live together in the same household.
