Last February, I traveled to Paris, France and became very interested in Napoleon Bonaparte. When I came home to the US, I researched my local library database and found there was a new DVD on Napoleon, an 8 hour movie with well-known actors, created by A&E. I got this movie from the library with high feelings of excitement that I was finally going to learn something about Napoleon and be entertained about it. Unfortunately, as soon as I put the DVD in, I found there was no way to turn the captions on. There was no subtitle menu to put in english subtitles (although the film is in English), there was also no way to allow the "black" closed captions. Needless to say, I was very UPSET! Please continue to advocate for improved captioning! Thank you!
Caption in English, Polish, etc are the great help .. One time caption can be copy to sell many of one kind dvd. What is the problem? Cost? That can pay for itself when selling after 5 thousand dvd.
Captioning without a doubt has been the best thing ever happened for the deaf community at large and for those with severe hearing loss. Children also learn to read as they watch tv. End the Hearing oppression of our deaf rights!
You just stole our freedom able to understand the communication and able to enjoy same time with hearing people. For example,I wont want to be idioit if I m only one who is not laughing in comedy movie while others are laughing. Picture it. SO KEEP CC ON AND DVDS WE HAVE A RIGHTS. OH have u heard ADA law??? Tsk tsk...
I am Deaf. It's not fair for Deaf community in America not having the closed captioned. For Hearing people, how do you feel if the sound takes away from any TV, DVD and etc. If the closed captioned will not install into any movies and etc therefore the sound should not install either. No CC and sound will be fair to Deaf and Hearing community in America.
I am not a deaf or hard of hearing person, but family members are as well as friends and clients. I think all media should be captioned for their knowledge and enjoyment. I also think that the schools in the U.S. should teach sign (mandatory for all children), so hearing and deaf can communicate from the git-go! It is great in an emergency, and when scuba diving and at other times when 'talking' is not acceptable or possible. Thanks.

Closed Captioned is very badly needed for deaf community and good education for English Language skill. I want to keep Closed Captioned on DVD alive forever.
Captions benefit not only deaf citizens but foreign language users and those with some hearing loss. Also one can turn off the sound when baby is asleep. CC equals sound.Keep improving it!
Don't buy or rent the DVD movies without closed captional. But i have no problem with DVD i bougt or rent so far. I am surprised another DVD don't have c.c.
Thank you, Dunik
I think, they shouldn't think about cutting off the closed caption on television, dvd and video or whatever because we are deaf and hard of hearing. We do need it so badly and it is very important for us to be able to read and understand what's going on.If without cc, how can we understand whats going on? Turn tv off forever? It will be so bored! I don't think it is fair for hearing people that still can enjoy tv without cc but what about us?Treat us fair!We should come first. If they cant afford it then, they should cut it down on others or raise the fund and keep cc for our sake! We MUST have CC for the rest of our lives. It is so IMPORTANT! Think about it!
I agree with everything that has been said. The common mentality among HEARING people is that everything has captions or subtitles when in reality there are several DVDs that don't. Many people benefit from captions, not just deaf people.
Let's remember, also, the large number of our elderly and soon-to-be- elderly baby boomers. These groups comprise the largest segments of our population and are the most affluent. As the number of hearing-impaired older people increase, the market for CC products will also increase. The film companies are forfeiting their advertising access to millions of these people unless they begin to include CC on their products. It is a financial no-brainer to develop products which are attractive to huge markets.Think of the millions of products aimed toward the baby boomers and their aging parents that could be advertised on CC films. So, if doing what is fair and required by law isn't enough motivation for the film companies, maybe they will consider be motivated by profit?
CC plays important role in Deaf/HH population. Without it, we would have limited knowledge with what is happening out there. CC is also known to enchace the reading skill.
I would like to stay on the dvd with cc on it if without then how can we understand the show and it will difficult life for deaf and hard of hearing people. the best way is stay cc on tv and dvd too i hope it's forever!!
There is approximately 20 percent of population in the US with some degrees of hearing loss... that is a pretty good number and we are entitled to have EVERY movie/TV show with CC!!!
40 + million people have hearing impairments in the United States alone. This does not even begin to count people from other countries that can benefit from closed-captioning. I have benefitted so much from CC that to imagine life without it is just unthinkable. Many times we would not watch a movie in the theater till it came out at Blockbuster and rent the DVD so that we could understand the movie with its CC. Its a lifesaver in knowing how to enjoy good entertainment.
I cannot live without Closed Captions. I need it CC on TV, DVD movie, Computer CD The Reader Rabbit Learning system. That is especially a big help for deaf Parents of hearing Children as well as those of Deaf Children truly your Tom L.
When I watched the T.V. which is good action and there is no closed captioned on and make me feel hurt and I should be fair with hearing people what they got to be heard, too.

I purchased too many WCW/WWE/WWF wrestling VHS/DVD don't have Closed Captions [CC] too many years during 80' 90's and still now 2005 don't have it? This VHS World Wrestling Enertainment makes BILLION OF DOLLARS PROFIT IN BUSINESS SO WHAT ABOUT CLOSED CAPTIONS FOR HEARING IMPAIRED!!! THAT'S WASTE MY THOUSAND OF DOLLARS LOST FOR NOTHING!! I AM TRUE FANS OF THE WRESTLING IN BUSINESS TRUSTED BUT NO [CC] (SIGH) PLEASE HELP ME OUT!
Hey!, Most time, I noticed that second disc in DVD case have no CC or subtitle at all. For example, both of deaf and hearing people purchase same price of DVD movie anywhere from the store. They real enjoyed to watch the movie with or without CC and subtitle. But hearing people mostly enjoyed to watch some interested, documentary stories on second disc and sometimes, first disc has "Commentary" by the director or producer that they never show us CC or subtitle. Why can't deaf people understand it without CC or subtitle How can deaf people know what are they saying thru the movie? Hello Hearing People? Hearing people can hear "commentary" thru the movie at all. What's about Deaf People? Huh? Got it! Are you agreeing with all of us!!!! Please keep submitted all of our deaf people! It's not fair for same price of DVD movie! I demand it with CC or subtitle all the time forever!
I urge you to recongize the needs of the hearing impaired to be able to have full access to all services in a hearing world, and that includes CC on all shows. CC on all shows is of great importance on strengthing our english, our understanding of the world, and for the hearing impaired people to enjoy the shows without the confusion of what they are talking about, and frustration in understanding hearing people speak on the shows.
