Ireland has a major dog over population issue. We destroy 85% of our stray and surrendered dogs. Dog pounds are full and costing the government massive amounts yearly.

Prevention is better than cure. Many dogs end up in dog pounds because of simple training and behaviour issues, which if dealt with properly can be easily resolved. The cost to local government of preventing a dog entering the pound is substantially less than when it enters the pound system so investment in this area is sensible.

There is a lack of support for dog owners in Ireland when compared to other EU countries. We need facilities to be provided where the community can get together and access trainers and behaviourists to assist in these areas. Rescue groups need these facilities too and vet practises would welcome this.

Therefore Dog Training Ireland respectfully request that provision be made for the following:

A dog training and behaviour centre available to the community and run by Dog Training Ireland. We are professional, qualified and insured Canine Trainers and Behaviourists.

The centre would “ideally” consist of the following:

- A grassland area of approx 12,000 sq ft where a shipping container can reside to hold items such as Agility and Flyball equipment. Dog Training Ireland can provide the container and equipment and are fully insured for public liability.

- The area should be enclosed with fencing so that dogs involved in Agility / Flyball are contained. As a temporary measure Dog Training Ireland can provide temporary fencing for the duration of each class.

- The provision for a temporary porta-cabin office with toilet facilities

- The provision that at a future date permission for an indoor training facility could be considered

The centre would serve the following purpose:

- Provide information on responsible dog ownership, the control of dogs act and making owners aware of the importance of training and controlling their dog

- Access to trainers and behaviourists for SPCA's and rescue groups for canine assessment and to aid rehoming and rehabilitation of unwanted and stray dogs

- Access to beginners, intermediate and advanced competition level obedience training classes

- Access to Agility and Flyball equipment providing an outlet for young people to become involved in competition work on both a team and individual basis.

- Activity days where competitions are held for Agility, Flyball and Obedience. These competition and activity days would be available to view by the general public thus providing an insight for people into the level of personal and community reward associated with having a well-trained dog.

- Should an indoor training facility become available the possibility of Training seminars / conferences by world renowned Trainers and Behaviourists.

The centre, if supported has the potential to progress and grow. There are no training and behaviour courses available in Ireland to those who would like to pursue this as a career. Young people could apprentice and learn new skills. There is potential for future employment and the activity itself will bring together the local and wider communities. There are not many families without a pet dog or two!

The centre would be ideally located in Dublin West close to the M50.

Thank You,
Tara Choules & Lisa Whelan

this would be a wonderful idea. as a dog lover and owner, a min pin and an aussie, i have friends in Ireland and would love to move. I would bring mine with me and want to do flyball and what a way to make such a country enjoy their animals even more!

I am supporting this as i would highly welcome an area accessible for people who want to train their dogs but maybe only have time in the evenings after work. Those people will need a space to practise and because garden space is very limited around Dublin this is a very good idea.
