"A huge temple of Mother Goddess Cybele surfaced at the Black Sea shore. It was excavated near the resort town of Balchik (northern Black Sea coast)," director of the Balchik Museum of History Dimitar Kanavrov told The Standart. The cult of the deity originates from Asia Minor and is later adopted by Greeks and Romans. Cybele was a Phrygian goddess and embodied fertile earth and life itself. The latest excavation works reveal that the temple is in perfect condition. Experts suppose that the stone used for the construction of the temple was hewn from the nearby rocks. " Most probably the temple was built in 2nd or 3rd century BC," said Mr. Kanavrov.
Archaeologists found many inscriptions, architectural decorations from the interior and the exterior of the temple and numismatic material on the site. They will provide additional information for the future excavation works and tell more about the place of worship. Most valuable founds so far are two marble statues of Cybele. One of the statues is in perfect condition, but the other one was headless. Despite the tremendous importance of the excavated temple experts are concerned about the excavation site, because of the adjacent construction works. Last Friday, a construction company poured concrete over what appeared to be the western side of the temple," warned the mayor of Balchik.
