I support this petition. If someone comes in first they should be declared the winner. I will boycott Nike products from this day forward and suggest others do the same
I support this petition. This woman won fair and square; unless she was informed in writing beforehand that she was not eligible to win if she did not run with the elite runners, she should get the prize.
I support this petition. Arien CLEARLY won the race, she should be the winner. Nowhere in the rules does it state one must declare themselves an "elite" in order to be eligible to win.
I support this petition strongly. As a runner, I take great exception to the "rules" that dictate the the winner of the elite race it the overall winner. The "winner" of the elite race needs to justify her position by running a time that is lower than any runner in the field. There is ONLY one runner and, in this case, it's Arien O'Connell.
Nike, this is ridiculous. This woman came out of the non-elite group, which means she had fewer "elite" competitors to pace/push her and still beat the "elite" winner's time. You blew it big time!!
I support this petition. As a runner myself, it isn't about registrations or red tape, it is about a level playing field, a simple formula to determine winners:
distance/speed = time
fastest time wins.
Everyone runs the same distance, the same marathon.
are you to say the one who finishes last runs a different race than the one who finishes first?
What if you have 3 waves of runners, as most runs do?
Do the runners in the first wave run a different race than the second, and similarly the third?
Please don't make me boycott Nike over this decision. I won't like it, but I'll do it.
Dear Nike,
I support this petition.
I just read what occurred to Arien O'Connell at the Nike Womens' Marathon in San Francisco.
I'm boycotting your product indefinitely because you don't represent good sportsmanship.
Please forward this to someone of rank at the Nike company whose dismissive attitude regarding this matter has unnecessarily undermined brand appeal, and thus is counterproductive to Nike's interests.
Over the years I've seen Nike advertisement spots championing the underdog, please bear in mind that future use of such a theme will make Nike look hypocritical unless situations such as this incident with Arien O'Connell are made right with simple fair play.
Thank you,
Clint Gould
I absolutely support this petition! Its the race's fault for bringing in "elites" who can't break 3 hours and sending them out in front of the pack. In the age of chip timing sometimes you might cross the line first, but be caught off guard by someone who started behind you. This isnt a decision of seconds, but by minutes. She deserves the win.
I support this petition.
I feel that if Nike will not award her 1st place then they must offer a considerable consolation (i.e. free registration for any/all Nike events for five years, a lucrative endorsement consisting of shoes/gear).
I support this petition. What's the point of having a race if the winner isn't the person who complete's the course in the fastest time. If the elites were running "a separate race" they can have their separate awards but Arien won that day.
