Ethiopian People Are Outraged By Ethiopian Regime’s Attacks Against Opposition Leaders, Their Members, Supporters And All Other Citizens.

Ethiopian Government and its security forces have used the horrible terrorist attacks as a pretext to justify their speed-up in implementing their communist agenda and to fraudulently steal the election that the Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) have rightly won. They are blatantly using the fear and grief that their attacks created as a cover for hasty moves to forcefully strip away people’s rights that we have won after a long period of time. They are using their so-called law and order to extend the crisis atmosphere to give themselves a window for rapid moves to consolidate a biased law-and-order national security regime. They claim they are doing it for our own good but it was only to fool the West and to steal people’s victory. This is a war on dissent, peace, justice and democracy. Ethiopian rulers may claim that they are keeping security to make us safe but in reality, they do not want us to be safe. They want us to be afraid of the police surveillance, anti-government crackdowns, homelessness and our so-called “Foreign Enemies” over there (where ever those Ethiopian rulers claim to find them). The people’s challenge is to find effective and legal ways to build the fight back and to challenge the real sources of insecurity and inequality that threaten our well-being.

Nevertheless, we strongly believe that these oppositions belong to a generation that knows no compromise with their dignity, a generation that loves to live in a free and just world, a generation that believes in a peaceful movement, and we are extremely proud too for them to be a part of this generation. Unfortunately, most have been under house arrests for winning the election and thousands too are detained purely for their peaceful and legitimate activities in support of true democracy and human rights, hence were only calling for their leaders immediate and unconditional release and also honoring people’s democratic votes that the regime is in the process of stealing. Hence their detention was illegal, and that they should be immediately released too.

Furthermore, there are confirmed reports that conditions in those detention centers and prisons are very poor, and that several prisoners are suffering from ill health. Their heads are shaved with the same blade with all others to intentionally subject some detainees to HIV/AIDS killer disease. This is an issue of serious concern not only Ethiopians but also for all humankind. The Government has trampled over the principle of humanity and the independence of judiciary to illegally imprison these citizens and the world community is not doing enough to stop it. The Government has defamed its own court and the international justice system by detaining innocent citizens, students and party officials without charge or trials whatsoever. These government actions do not meet international human rights standards but no organization could do anything about it. In addition, surveillance of students has been pervasive, with plain-clothed and uniformed police and military officers present on university campuses. In many cases, members of the security forces have shot at students as they have attempted to break up protests or meetings and brutally murdered over 40 people to date including newly elected parliamentarians and party officials. Thousands of other citizens are reportedly beaten with fists and rifle butts and threatened that they would be killed too.

It was the primary responsibility of the leaders to promote and protect their citizen’s right to freedom of expression, which is also a right of all citizens regardless of their gender, religion, belief and political ideology but instead, we have witnessed that the regime violated the very rights it is supposed to protect and promote. They have been breaking their own state laws and the country’s constitution. The aggression and stubbornness perpetrated against students, opposition leaders, members, supporters, officials, journalists and lawyers by EPRDF leadership and in particular its leader, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, his Security Henchmen and other thugs affiliated to the TPLF or EPRDF are beyond our belief. Therefore, the Ethiopian people strongly rejects the aggression committed against all the above which is unprecedented in the history of political life in Ethiopia. The assault on the Ethiopian people is symbolic of the current situation in Ethiopia, which lacks an independent parliament, an independent judiciary and a court of law that is able to protect them and hold the attackers and perpetrators of those killings accountable. This was genocide and crimes against humanity hence it must be stopped at once before the country goes into further crisis.
The Ethiopian regime of continuously and heavily using of intimidation, harassment, beating, terror, torture and killings against its citizens as a tool of law and order and election fraud investigation with forced confessions are the worst kinds of crimes that Ethiopia have experienced. The regime’s Agaazie Brigade’s attack on civilians of stone throwing young students meant to break the will of the opposition as a symbol of attack on the nation. That torture aimed at by the regime’s security has been used for many years, but the difference this time is that it was done openly on the streets and around houses too. The attackers intentionally humiliated activists whether by imprisoning, detaining & beating or by having their houses burnt. The most shocking thing about it is that it was systematic; EPRDF political leaders and security men were giving orders to assault their citizens for casting their votes for the opposition and especially for Coalition for Unity and Democracy that is believed to have scored a landslide general election victory to form the next national democratic government.

The Ethiopian people though powerless, are not afraid of these practices, but fear that these aggressive and illegal acts by the regime will actually lead the opposition to fight even more persistently to motivate more people to join the fight but as proved to the international community, the leaders of the opposition want wholeheartedly to resolve Ethiopia’s election problems peacefully not as the regime wanted us and the western world to believe. If not, they would seek justice abroad if the violence goes unpunished or the international community turned a blind eye on these ongoing atrocities and government anarchy. We want all those responsible in the regime to be taken to justice in the country and all those government fraudulent and illegal activities stopped. We need an independent enquiries for those beaten, detained, imprisoned, houses burnt, injured and brutally killed. If Ethiopia’s justice doesn’t protect and defend the nation, then the opposition will have to go to the world court but we believe that the world community especially, the EU, US and Britain can do in their powers to find a lasting solution to EPRDF’s dictatorship, treason and its behaviors after it lost the election.

Hence we are calling on all the members of Ethiopian society everywhere, the Human Right Organizations including Amnesty International, the EU, the governments of the Unites States and United Kingdom and all freedom and democracy loving nations of this world to fully support the Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD), United Ethiopian Democratic Forces (UEDF) and other Democratic Forces who has spent all their lives serving their people and their country to install a democratic government. We are a group of Ethiopians in and outside the country who have become a force of good and who try to work for the country’s peace and prosperity and expose those who work and aim at destroying the country’s freedom, peace, democracy, safety and security. Hence we sincerely and wholeheartedly urge the world community to force the Ethiopian government to release immediately all detained human rights defenders, political leaders and activists, students and innocent citizens who have been detained for the peaceful exercise of their right to freedom of opinion, expression, assembly and or chosen association. We also ask Amnesty International to consider some of them to be a prisoner of conscience who should be immediately and unconditionally released.

Last but not least, there are press reports too, that the following CUD leaders and officials some of who are still under house arrests have received serious threats to be wrongly charged and imprisoned. This is a true reflection of the composition, image and character of the Ethiopian government. These leaders are, Lidetu Ayalew: General Secretary of UEDP-Medhin party and until recently a Spokesperson for CUD, Engineer Hailu Shawul: Elected parliamentarian and Current CUD Chairman, Admassu Melaku, Getachew Mengistu, Mushe Semu: UEDP-Medhin Public Relations Head, Abay Birhanu, Engineer Gizachew Siferaw: UEDP-Medhin Spokesperson, Gebrechristos Haileyesus, Andargachew Tsege and many Students. These are only the very few people that were leaked to “The Nation Newspaper” a week or so ago. Our political leaders continued to ignore our plight and existence. For this and a multitude of other reasons, the entire nation is suffering. Hence we ask your assistance in helping the opposition to claim their victory to put our country back onto the right track of a great nation it was before.

Sincerely,

Dr G Bekele

Long Live Meles Zenawi! TO: The Cheap leaders of Opposition Parties. Your mission is already clear to the people of Ethiopia and to the leaders of the western world. You just want to take power by force so that you can lead the country by cheos to the best of your sole benefits. The situation here in Ethiopia has dramatically changed in a manner such that significant portion of the poor has becom beneficiary such a change. For this, I would like to extend special thanks and words of appreciation to the current regime and its strong leader-H.E Meles Zenawi. The point that has to be driven home by the opposition parties is that Ethiopians have reached a stage where they cann't tolerate any act aimed at taking the country back to where it was under the defunct Derge regime. Any Ethiopian has the right to be a member of any political organization and oppose any government leading the country as long as his/her acts are peacefull and in accordance with the constitution of the country. Otherwise, acts that adversely intervene with the smooth-functioning of the country will naturally be followed by equitable actions, as it is the case with any other civilized country in the globe. The bottom line is, therefore, that president Bush and Prime Minister Blair must be very careful when they are approached by such nonsense individuals as CUD and others who claim themselves to be politicians while in reality they are terriorist groups like Alquida and the like.

To: George W. Bush and Tony Bliar. Yor excelencies,I don't personally feel that you have a time to spare to entertain lies and baseless acquisations made by such opposition parties as CUD against EPRDF in general and prime minister Meles Zenawi in particular. Majority of the the so called "Opposition Parties" here in Ethiopia and abroad are opposing every good thing the goverment might do simply because they were not able to do something better in the past, and this caused to them some sort of mental unrest and jelousy particularlytowards the daynami brain of Meles Zenawi. By any measure, the current regime is most favoured by all poor Ethiopians and, no doubt, the government is working round the clock to transform the lives of the poor into better standards of living. This is an asset upon which the government is capitalizing and, certainly, this has become a source of frustration to those who want to take Ethiopia back to the times of the Derg regime and that of that of the Emperial period. CUD has clearly formed a cooperation with the Shabia In Eritrea and allowed Eritreans to burn Ethiopian flag in front of their naked eyes. The, moreover, have shown their deep love and concern to the terriorist group called ISU in somalia by refusing to give support to the government's agenda for self-defence. Thanks to the articulate mind of Meles, ISU is already burried in somalia soil, though some are given shelter by Eritrea-a country that is working day and night to distabilize Ethiopia and the horn. I am highly confused and surprised to read a lie that states that the Ethiopian people are outraged by the current regime in the country, a regime that must have been praised and appreciated for the several domestic and international achivements that it has been registering since the date it came to power. Therefore,to the best of the Ethiopian people, please tell them that everything has a limit-even lies.

Is it earthly possible to support your petition, which is absolutely based on fabricated lies? Why can't you leave Meles Zenawi alone so that he can teach you everything that you can not acquire it through formal education? Please allow me to let you know simple fact/s. You know, Meles is building this county to the best of the Ethiopian people. However, you are too hasty to destroy it. It is high time for you stupid guys to know that Meles is the most respected leader by all poor Ethiopians in general and the proposed receipents of this petition (Bush and Blair)in particular. Thus, you are wasting your time in a futile exercise. You wiil keep on tlking, as Meles keeps on working-This is the real difference between you and that great Premier. I hope, if you have brain, you will be able to understand where you stand relative to Meles.

Dear fools, Can't you practically see the level of development Ethiopia has attained under Meles's administration? Or should I assume that you are opposing this great man and the party he leads just to underline the precense of your name-"opposition parties?" To the best of the Ethoipian people, I beg you to write and speak what is right. It would have been better if you changed your name to "Problem Creator" rather than using the name "Petition Creator" as you may very well know that you are creating problems to our people who love peace development, democracy, and every good adjectives to that end

I is really nonensense to have the feeling that this great man is doing nothing better to the people of Ethiopia. It is, therefore, better for you kids to concentrate on what really is of benefit to you and to the nation. Though, I am not a member of any political organization here in Ethiopia I would like to make it crystal clear that Meles Zenawi is the only man who could bring about a substantial change in the economy, political, and social dimensions of this Poor country.
