The United States, a country which prides itself in democratic representation and the ideal of freedom, currently has zero federal legislature on fur farming. (1) Despite animal rights activists' work and successes in the food farming sectors, there is still no provision for animals on fur farms in the Animal Welfare Act of 1966 or in the Humane Slaughter Act of 1958. WE BELIEVE that the cruelty involved in fur farming is -at least- as inhumane as unregulated meat farming, and as a result WE BELIEVE that animals harvested for their fur should have -at least- the same rights as those animals who are harvested for their meat. WE BELIEVE that representation in our participatory government is a key element in moving towards the rights of non-human animals. WE BELIEVE that local legislation is the first step toward said rights. WE BELIEVE that North Carolina has the ability to be a foundational mover of this legislation, as members of the FCUSA (Fur Commission USA) can be found in-state. (2) WE PROPOSE legislation similar to the AWA or HSA which will provide regulation for fur farming, and will either extend the duties of agents policing food farming or provide for additional inspectors on fur farms. WE PROPOSE, failing the previous proposition, that the AWA or HSA be amended to account for fur farms.
