NYP (Nanyang Polytechnic)

Students who are currently doing their FYPJ (Final Year Project, 2005 3rd Batch, from 3rd October 2005 to 23rd December 2005) have just been informed that the dress code is changed to Formal/Office Wear.

The students who did their FYPJ last semester were allowed to wear casual till the final 2 weeks. The dress code for the last 2 weeks was polo shirts minimial.

The reason for the change in dress code is that some of the visitors/VIPs who have visited the labs commented that the students' attire is inappropriate.

This is extremely unfair to the students who are taking FYPJ right now.

Those who feel that this change is totally wrong and unjustified, please sign this petition

it's not fair.. at first your said we can wear pole-tee and plain jean.. (some even went to buy pole-tee..) and now your ask us to wear formal.. although we do have 2-3 set formal wear in our closets but you couldnt be asking us to wear the same old things for the following weekS and one formal wear cost us at least about $60, it's a bit too much for us as we dont have any income source. so please let us wear back at least our pole-tee and jean.......!!!!

Sorry for offending some people. Some people can be beautiful and handsome, but they are empty inside. Don't you see many examples where successful people are initially darn poor?

If NYP insists in this, provide the students with free wardrobes of full suits. I feel the visitors should judge by the quality works produced by the students not by their outfits. NYPSU, please do more work for the needy students!

Formal wear for 2 weeks is totally outrageous, unless u want your students to wear the same clothing like for 4~5 days. That's because a normal poly student will only have on the average 1~2 sets of formal wear. Asking them to go buy more is financially unlikely. One set of formal wear costs around $100~$200, easily equivalent to a whole month of pocket money. Bad move by the NYP management.

Although im not from nyp but i after reading this im sad this has further spoilt the image of nyp in my eyes. it is totally unreasonable to have students wearing formal for fyp all the time. even at work employeers give workers the freedom of casual wear when needed. Dear all students i feel there is a need to feedback this to the management besides placing it here online is not a very good solution. If there is a need people like me from the public were gladly help in the participation of this petition as in written format.

Oh My God! We are already having enough trouble finding clothes to waer for our IPP. Now have to continue that anguish when we come back for fypj! Initially, i was looking forward to come back to school to do my fypj but now, i dun think so!i find wearing formal wear to school very ridiculous!Like many have said, $$ is also a factor. Pls consider the positions of those students who are already having financial difficulties. This will definitely add on to their burden!Pls review the stand again!

I was shocked when I heard of this statement, even though I have already graduated from NYP. The reason that polytechics are diffrent from JCs are that Poly students have more freedom of choice in their course of studies and of course their choices of attire. If you force the students to wear formal wear to do their projects, no doubt it will project a image that NYP is "Professional" but how will the students feel? Some of the students with good results chose Poly over JCs over the reason that they do want to be labelled as " just another generic student in Jc". Instead, they want to different. They want their individuality which is what Polytechics offer. By taking this away from them, it makes Polytechics no different from JCs...

Haha... NYP gotta be kidding... Everything want to be best yet ended screwed up. Get a life man. NYP concern about image hence asking all FYP students to wear Formal ? Come to think of it... Why dont NYP admins spend more time on improving the Management rather then Image. More and more people will DETEST NYP for these craps. Wear Formal ? Why dont NYP say that they are coming out with a set of Uniform. LOLx...

the only thing why i'm against the rule, is because the school obviously only wants the image of NYP to be great while on the other hand, you are neglecting the basic right of the students. and whatever happened to the "DONT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER" saying? has it gone down the drain? and the worst thing of all is that you are practically THREATENING us by debarring us and deducting our grades which is the most unfair thing ever.

im currently doing my IPP, going for TEP.. this news kinda shocking to me, even if i had money to get those formal wear, its ridiculous for students in polytechnic to wear formal walking already school, if wanna do so just implement uniform system and provide the uniform at cheaper price, morever not every IT firms require employer to wear full formal everyday, even wearing tshirt and shorts shldn't form a problem, firstly NYP is primaily a school, students not at frontline interaction with customers, industry wise unless can prove 90-100% of the industry wear formal? some VIP walk in and say student attire not appropriate, whats their reason for formal wear? for the look? if so for who to look? lecturers? even as i doing my IPP now some times i still need to wear casual instructed by supervisor. i understannd the need for formal in IPP or formal in presentations meetings etc. wearing formal just to sit there and do ur coding? NYP has to give a reason for the rules, even complains need to have their reasons. don't remove difference from tertiary and JC/sec. even to polo-T is kinda funny.. just wear appropriate to normal school rules etc nt too casual no slipper etc is fine..

although i've finished my fypj, when i heard of this news i feel that the school is really ridiculous. initially was the polo t-shirt thing. fine, ppl are already stocking their closets with those and now you are saying that they have to wear formal to school every single day? nonsense. you working adults can afford to buy formal but that doesn't mean we students can afford to buy more formal wear. During attachement we were made to wear formal so fine, we follow the rules. now in school, we still have to wear formal? we treat the school like our 2nd home. do you wear formal wear when you're at home? if you do, you're a clown. anyway, wear formal doesnt mean produce good end product. ppl in sinlets n shorts mayb have better stuff up there. the school is forcing students to abide this rule by giving demerit points to those who doesn’t wear formal? this is call threatening. we have got no freedom in school. do we have to abide this nonsensical rule? Ok, you say that the visitors commented that the outfit we wear to fypj is inappropriate. Why dun you implement the formal dressing rule earlier instead of implementing this now when you’ve just announced that its ok to wear polo t-shirts 2 wks ago? If you are really implementing this rule, please consider the factors that will affect the students. We are not working adults and there’s no pay when we ‘work’ in fypj labs. Where’s the money going to come from for the formal wear? Technical officers are working adults and they are not even in formal wear. There’s no reason why we should wear formal. Please discuss or get feedbacks from students before you implement something like this. We are the ones doing the project for the school to make money. We dun even get a pay for that. Although the school is trying its best to pull relations with companies in the industry by making changes from visitors feedback, implementing this just wouldn’t work. Companies did employ stu

Some companies allow the employees to wear casual clothings, I don't understand why we have to wear formal even when we haven't started working? Ridiculous. If the sch insists us to wear formal, pay for us then.
