I support this petition. すし is meant to be fresh... Thats the whole point of it... Freezing it makes no sesne. It also puts diners at more risk... If it isn\'t thawed properly there is more chance of food poisoning... So, keep sushi fresh!

What? Freezing fresh fish? That totally disregards the whole point of wanting to eat sushi, how ridiculous.

It sounds to me like a better idea would be if the health unit did their job and made sure the food was safe when prepared properly. Instead of this economy crippling band-aid solution.

Having lived in Japan for many years and fallen in love with the taste of sushi, it is so disappointing to eat what is now served here. The texture is just not the same.

No freezing of fresh fish! I commend the government for trying to be careful after SARs but please, not with fear mongering where no correlation exists.

This will have an impact on restaurant businesses akin to SARS. Kindly recognize that for thousands of years raw fish has been consumed and we are blessed to have such a healthy option of food.

This is an absolutely ridiculous move on the part of the Ontario government. There is no scientific basis for this law. The government is ruining sushi in Ontario for all of us. Please repeal this law before the sushi industry in Ontario is irreperably damaged.

David Gannon said 11/22/04, 2:16 pm (verified)
Sushi from fresh fish has been part of a healthy diet for Japanese for centries, and worldwide for decades. There have been no significant health problems experienced in Ontario, so legislation is unnecerssary and repressive.

In my opinion (as well as everyone else's opinion I'm sure) freezing the fish before serving sushi makes it taste much more awful. If no one has been "sushi-poisoned" what are the chances it will EVER happen? This is just a silly ridiculous law that should be gotten rid of. It will give us back the original taste of the food we love.

Tomiko Tabuchi said 11/06/04, 8:44 pm (verified)
There's no need for this new law. I've been eating raw fish for over 50 years and nothing has ever happened. Why now?
#32

Robyn Holmes said 11/06/04, 8:42 pm (verified)
I do not believe that they are even considering banning raw fish based on the risk of a parasite. We haven't banned chicken for salmonella yet have we? Why the RISK of illness, when the Illness from poorly handled chicken and other poultry causes illness regularly? This is ridiculous and should not be considered.

Any time a health regulation is proposed, shouldn't there be a document proving the degree of 'harm' caused by what is being changed???! I have never met, heard of, or read of anyone ever suffering any health problems from eating sushi, ever..This is truely ridiculous and really , really STUPID.. Other territories must laugh at what a foolish waste this is.

I am frustrated to see action taken by the government for no apparent reason, when there are so many other causes of worth that should be taken up.

Last time I checked, Ontario wasn't part of the US! There has never been a case in Toronto, and in Canada the only cases are from RIVER fish which is not used in Sushi! Japanese health authorities actually say there are only 1000 serious cases of anisakiasis per year there, out of a nation of 130 million raw fish eaters! Ontario is crazy. Just another reason to avoid it and head to Vancouver!

- you've got to be kidding! - just because the US does something doesn't mean we should - they're not the measure of anything

This is nuts. I love sushi. Are we going to be forced to travel to the States for our Sushi. Let us make a few decisions on our own. Tired of the government regulating all of our lives to death.
#23

Joy Eliuk said 10/26/04, 5:30 am (verified)
The government should stay out of this issue. Making sure health regulations are followed properly is to be encouraged not just in sushi restaurants but all types of restaurants, but the government should not legislate a practice that will destroy the quality of the food while providing no proven benefits.

Freezing sushi would ruin the flavour and texture of the fish. I believe that a true sushi chef is highly skilled and should not have his art tainted by freezing the fish. Cooked chicken is the cause of more illnesses and we don't take it off the shelf.

Frozen sushi?? What,, unheard of,If the cheif's are trained right then the sushi is prepared right,,people that don't like raw fish or whatever otehr reason to complain, don't eat it then, stay away from it and allow people like me to enjoy what is left of the many things that haven't been changed or altered in some way...frozen sushi,, wouldn't have it,,,, leave it alone..

Lisa Morel said 10/19/04, 3:33 pm (verified)
Sushi chefs are highly-trained skilled people. As long as cleanliness regulations are met, there is no danger to people. You don't regulate head chefs of fine restaurants for craeting sauces that are extrememly high in calories and fat....

This law sounds like the pit bull ban - lets muck with the fish, when it is the people and their actions (not handling things properly) that potentially cause problems, not the fish - kinda like the irresponsible pit bull owners giving others a bad name!

Haha ha I live in Australia where it's HOT, and we have hundreds of sushi stands with no problems. You need a qualified chef to take responsibility for food safety. This is the stupidest law I ever heard of! Imagine ruining good sashimi like this.

This health regulation will deprive people of their right to experience a type of food from a unique culture which has served this food for centuries with rarely any ill affects. Please allow responsible restaurants to serve sushi in the manner which it is meant to be served. Reprimmand those places which do not abide by strict health practices but don't punish those that are doing a fabuolous job by bringing its guests wonderful food on a consistent basis. Thank-you.

What is the point of sushi if it's frozen? Have the people making this law ever had pre-frozen sushi? I'm sure it does not taste very well at all. Considering the popularity of sushi it would be pretty detrimental to the restaurant industry. Has anybody passed a law that chicken should be cooked before it is consumed? Not that I know of. It would certainly be a non-wise idea to do so but that is left to the discretion of the person eating it. I think if anything they should create a law that says that broccoli should be cooked before eating it. People need to get a life. Go ban yourself from breathing you useless human being and stop wasting time bothering us with what we can and can't do. Sick of it
