Mr. Obvious said 07/27/05, 4:26 am (verified)
You people need to relax. Porn is a huge industry that could buy you, and the women wouldn't do it if they felt "exploited" or weren't paid enough. Porn serves one purpose. Those who buy it want to see women having sex, not teaching a graduate school course on quantum physics. And what's this child abuse thing? To be in commercially produced porn you MUST be at least 18 years of age when you make it i.e. ADULT. They're especially cautious because of the old Traci Lords fiasco.

i agree,on bbc1 yesterday at 9am there was a programme all about the porn industry which said porn had become mainstream which sickened me,but as the programme was going out at that time when small children are watching it seems sad but true,im increasiongly being made to feel like a prude because im against pornography although im broadminded,i object to how women are shown as brainless sexobjects not living breathing women with valid opinions-i hope this hits the bank hard and they have to grovel. good luck!

It is very disappointing that what would appear to be a respected organisation could consider this acceptable; major Scottish institutions have the opportunity of setting an example of investment practice which benefits investors and legitimate business. This cynically promotes money making activities which depend on degrading and exploiting women and, indeed, men who read such magazines.

The word “respect” runs through the HBOS statement on its equality and diversity policy. “We are determined,” the Bank says, “to treat all current and potential colleagues and customers fairly and with respect.” Well, pornography is profoundly disrespectful of women. What will your Asian customers and colleagues think of the Bank owning ‘Asian Babes’ . Or your customers and employees with young daughters think about your association with ‘Barely Legal’; if that is what it sounds like it is a peculiarly repellant publication. And as an older woman the idea of Sixty Plus seems to me pretty sick. I am sure you can do better than to be the Bank that owns the ‘top shelf mags’. A commitment to “ Enlightened ethical employment and business practices” suggests that NOT acquiring 45 pornographic magazines would better maintain your commitment “to making our environment at work free from discrimination or harassment of any kind” and to continuing “to value and respect your colleagues and their dignity at work.” I hope you will withdraw from this deal when you realise that your customers and colleagues will not continue to respect and value you if you proceed with it. They will not use my hard earned cash to fund what is essentially sex abuse for money. Thank you, SWAP, for bringing this to my attention.

The Bank of Scotland supposedly prioritises ethical considerations, but this transaction demonstrates the hidden limits to its ethical commitment: we can expect them to challenge many money-making ventures in the name of values, but not the sexual commodification of women and children. In that respect, the Bank of Scotland is no better than the rest.

scarlett said 10/06/04, 2:51 am (verified)
The Bank of Scotland has been given a privileged role in our society and must take responsibility for its actions and not abuse its power and position of trust. How can it continue to ignore evidence that highlights violence against women and children caused by pornography and particularly the insidious nature of so called soft porn magazines that has damaged so many lives.
#9

Geraldine Golder said 10/05/04, 11:47 pm (verified)
That a major bank can endorse the violence against women that is pornography by financially backing it's production and distribution demonstrates the total disregard they have for women's human rights. They should put their money where their 'Equality and Diversity' strategy is and join the struggle to promote women's human rights.

Glasgow Violence Against Women Partnership said 10/05/04, 4:54 pm (verified)
The Glasgow Violence Against Women Partnership fully support this campaign and call on the Bank of Scotland to withdraw financial support to the promotion of pornography. There is increasing evidence of links between pornography, child sexual abuse and others forms of male violence against women and children, and we call on the BoS to play its part in ending these crimes.
