We, the undersigned, are calling upon Patricia Hewitt to resign from her post as Health Secretary after jobs cuts in the NHS affecting front line workers and leaving entire hospital departments facing closure.

'The largest NHS trust in the north-west of England announced plans to axe nearly 10% of its staff yesterday in an attempt to eliminate a £21m deficit.'

from the same article:

The public sector union Unison said it was a disgrace that the cuts had been announced without any consultation with staff representatives. Nurses heard that their jobs might be at risk from the radio while eating their breakfast.

Massive overspends and deficits equating to job cuts:

Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, which manages Crawley Hospital and East Surrey Hospital, has said 400 jobs will go.

East Sussex NHS Hospitals Trust, which runs the Conquest Hospital in Hastings and Eastbourne District General, has axed up to 250 jobs

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust plans to lose 325 jobs.

and the problem continues to escalate:

'Hospital job cuts could reach 24,000 - four times the number of job losses announced in recent weeks'
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4893874.stm

See the timeline of NHS job cuts for more information:

We believe the only honourable course of action is for Hewitt to take responsibility and to fall on her own sword in order to prevent any further closures of hospital departments.

The situation in the NHS is reaching breaking point. I have just graduated as a dietitian and have found myself competing against up to 100 appicants for a single job. I have now decided to opt out of the NHS and am studying towards a PhD - a waste of tax payers money in training me for 4 years to become a health professional? So if there are so few dietetic jobs, what it must be that there are enough dietitians already working - oh no, the majority of depts are overstretched and having to deal with sub-optimal staff levels due to 'frozen posts' (when a member of staff leaves they are not replaced). This adds a great deal of pressure to staff and untimately affects the services offered to patients.
