South San Antonio ISD is constructing a sports complex on its South San campus to be used for all future athletic events.

Rumor has it that the "dome" will be named after Superintendent Ronald Durbon. The community of the southside would like to simply say "NOT AGAIN!" We do not want another building named after another person with so-called legacy. We have a better person to nominate and hope you feel the same way. This person is Ray Rangel, a 1994 graduate from South San High School and, to date, the only person from South San/West Campus who has been killed while serving our country in Iraq.

Rangel was killed on February 13, 2005. The Air Force firefighter died while trying to rescue soldiers from a military vehicle that rolled into a canal near Balad, 50 miles north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

During his time at South San High School, Ray took electrical trades classes at the Career Education Center. He also played defensive back on the Bobcats football team, where he was affectionately known as "Crazy Ray." Enlisting in the Air Force in September of 1994, Sgt. Rangel was stationed at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene. He was deployed to Iraq in September. Rangel is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter. He is also survived by his parents, Federico and Cynthia Rangel, three sisters, along with aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Sgt. Rangel's mother is the cafeteria manager at Athens Elementary School. His mother and father-in-law are also employees district employees.

The school board will be asking for nominations in the coming months for suggested names of this complex. We believe that with this petition ready and with support, we will name the facility after a true hero worthy of a distinction. Let's honor Ray, who laid down his life for his fellow soldiers, and more importantly, for his fellow Americans, to protect the freedoms we hold most dear.

I am a South San graduate from 2004 and would love it for the new dome to be named after a fallen hero, who died w/ a brave heart and who did it for America.

I never knew Ray as an adult but I did enjoyed his company as a child. His parents attended the same church I attended and I believe with all my heart Ray was raise with great morals and great family values. It would be a better honored for South San if Ray would be nominated as the future hero for our children. Since half the community knows of him
