Goal Progress:
Currently, the FBI estimates that over a 100,000 girls are held captive per year in this terrible trade. For the most part, they are usually abducted from their everyday lives and forced against their will to perform sexually degrading acts for men. The girls usually range anywhere from 9-19 years old, with the average age being 11. For a long time it has been perceived that such heinous practices only occur in places like Mexico and Thailand, though it is now becoming a growing problem here in the United States. In Rhode Island, namely Providence, there is sex trafficking going on right under our noses. Thousands of girls are being held captive like animals in places that front as "massage parlors" and exotic dance clubs. These women are victimized and are bound to live amongst the most unsanitary living conditions. The captors usually threaten the girls' lives as well as the well being of their families if they dare to escape. These girls are usually lured in by empty promises of becoming a model or movie star and then are met with the cold reality of sexual slavery. This is an issue that must be dealt with immediately with adequate force and legislation. Rhode Island Representative Joanne M. Giannini is planning to unveil legislation to the Rhode Island General Assembly that will aid in preventing these acts of terror and degradation. The bill will seek that anyone guilty of human-trafficking as well as prostitution will be able to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. In addition to that, it will also be able to arrest the "Johns" who are paying to basically rape these innocent young women. Current legislation in place only states prostitution and sexual trafficking illegal if done outdoors. The proposed legislation will give power to the authorities to make the stated acts and practices illegal indoors as well. My plan of action is to form a virtual petition to gather support for the passing of the bill as well as a personal letter to the Rhode Island General Assembly on the issue and urging them to approve Representative Gianninis' legislation.
