this is it. the last, best hope is in the university. the Nazis have crossed the commons like the Wehrmacht. The "Invisible Hand" will crush us all. This is no less than the suppression of truth for money. Truth will win... eventually. But at what cost?
Indiana is a major industrial state, with a growing population. Labor's concerns affect everyone, and university invovlement remains important and necessary to the political and economic health of Indiana and its citizens.
Funding was cut by the legislature after DLS properly reported that the apprenticeship programs of the anti-union Associated Builders & Contractors was not USDOL-approved.
Without this school, the people of Indiana have no chance to represent in an educated manner the best intrests of working people of this state. The companies already have the advantage in Indiana. Labor Studies is the only way to educate Hoosiers.
As an IU alum w/ degrees in German and Labor Studies, I am appalled that the university would consider dumping the Labor Studies program. It is a necessary adjunct to pure Business School views of the issues.
If students enroll and the program is making money, there is no logic to downsize the program with out marked goals in improving efficiency. If Governor Mitch Daniels is behind this action, the DLS only needs to hold out til 2009. Governor Daniels has only created fiascos with the daylight savings time and toll road leasing. Governor Daniels will not be re-elected, and I am a conservative voter.
Many patriots died to win fair labor standards for American workers. It is decidedly unpatriotic, not to mention shameful, to do away with the Division of Labor Studies, which carries on the difficult, often thankless task of analyzing and resolving countless issues facing today's workers. If a financial crisis truly exists, try funneling funds you would normally use in recruiting and keeping sports players and coaches or building stadiums into academic departments in need. It is academics that will ultimately benefit Indiana communities, not a winning basketball team.
Labor Law is at it's highest in importance to local employees due to all the work companies are sending overseas.
Please keep this organization going for our sake.
Thanks
IT'S IMPORTANT THAT ALL STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO UNDERSTAND AND STUDY BOTH SIDES OF THE LABOR/CAPITAL RELATIONSHIP...PARTICULER LY IF WE HOPE TO MAINTAIN A VIABLE MIDDLE CLASS.
