Dear President Ahmedinejad:

The undersigned members of the University of Miami community write to protest your regime’s unacceptable behavior which threatens the peace of the Middle East and the world.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has been a consistent violator of human rights, and promoter of regional and international violence since its formation in 1979. You have had a direct role in promoting such instability as a leader of the Islamic Students Association which participated in holding American diplomats as hostages, senior commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and now as its President. In each of your increasingly important roles you have served as an instrument of the regime’s goals of aggression and suppression of freedom-seeking individuals in your own country. Your regime’s activities include:

1. Supporting international terrorism. Iran has been identified as a state sponsor of terrorism since 1984. In that time, your regime has sponsored murderous groups that have killed and wounded thousands of innocent Americans, Europeans, Arabs, Iranians, and Israelis. These groups include Hezbollah, Hamas, and Islamic Jihad, among others.

2. Denying freedom for the people of Iran. Your regime bans freedom of speech and religion, relegates women to second-class status, and denies all the right to vote their conscience. It maintains prisons full of political prisoners and threatens all Iranian citizens with a secret police that is subject to no restraint under law resulting in summary executions, torture, and imprisonment.

3. Pursuing nuclear weapons in contravention of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. As a signatory of that treaty, Iran is required to report any and all activities relating to nuclear research or energy generation. The pattern of lies that surround the forced disclosure of your regime’s ongoing work with nuclear materials, as well as its acquisition of long range missiles despite the absence of any threat, make it a certainty that Iran continues to violate the NPT and seeks to obtain nuclear weapons.

4. Threatening neighboring states. Your regime facilitates terrorist attacks against Iraqi, American and British soldiers who are supporting the creation of a democratic state in Iraq. Your recent statement threatening to “wipe Israel off the map” in contravention of Iran’s requirement as a member of the United Nations not to threaten other member states of that body is further evidence of your regime’s hostile intentions towards your neighbors, the region and the world.

For these reasons we ask you to halt your regime’s support for the various terrorist groups it trains, finances and equips, stop your nuclear weapons acquisition program, free all political prisoners, and permit the creation of a democratic government that will safeguard the rights and well-being of the people of Iran and the world. We also ask you to allow the United Nations to create an independent commission that will stand in judgment of your personal actions and the actions of the various members of your government that have participated in human rights violations inside and outside of Iran so that the many innocent people harmed by the Islamic Republic since 1979 might obtain a measure of justice for the crimes committed against them.
