I have already been quite vocal in my criticism of the music industry's obsessive and extremely unhealthy compulsion to force young female artists to act much older than would be appropriate for their ages. This current trend began with the Lolita-ish antics of Britney Spears first album and has continued for the past 5+ years with a variety artists. 3LW, a group of young female artists who were underage for most, if not all, of their albums, was a glaring example of raunchy, adult lyrics being performed by young, unknowledgeable girls.

Now, we have 13-year old Jojo being added to this ongoing moral disaster. The problem of young performers has never been that they are too young to be making albums, it's that they are too young to be singing about the subjects that these adult songwriters are penning for them. Jojo is still in middle school and yet she's being made to be a tricked-out R&B diva. Her debut single "Leave" is atrocious because it deals with cheating boyfriends and 'knowing about the other girl'. I'm sorry, but there is absolutely no set of circumstances under which it is appropriate for a 13-year old to be singing about such a topic. And, even if Jojo is familiar with that subject, most 13-year olds are not and should not be.

In a recent interview, Jojo even displayed out of sorts her perceptions and priorities are. She spoke of 'little 11-year old girls coming up to her and saying how much "Leave" helped them deal with a breakup'. !?!?!?!? I must be the only one who sees the problem here (judging by the 4 1/2 star average review), but beyond the fact that it's amusing that a 13-year old is referring to 11-year olds as 'little girls', why should Jojo be 'helping' 11-year olds deal with breakups? It's inappropriate for 13-year olds, so it sure isn't appropriate for 11-year olds. Jojo is too young to recognize this and, apparently, so are most of her fans. But, hearing songs like this can influence young children profoundly and there is simply no excuse for allowing this shameful musical trend to continue.
