I am trying to re-enlist in the Armed Forces, and can not, Due to this stupid Law. My first question is, why the gun thing, there are many ways that people are killed, such as nives, scissors, brake lines being cut, suffication drowning, and what not. What is next they gonna take away our kitchen utensils, cars, swimmingpools, and pillows! Remove the law.

because my dad (who loves hunting and target shooting)was attacked by his now ex-wife (my then stepmom). He tried to defend himself by holding her back. They were both yelling and the cops came. Neither of them had bruises but they arrested him. Under this law because he has a misdemeaner he could never own a gun again. And then I don't get to go target shooting with my dad anymore.

An armed society is a polite society, history proves that when citizens give up their arms the government gets more repressive. Therefore an armed society ia also a FREE society.

Whether it be a misdemeanor or felony. A person's right to bear arms should only be taken if a firarm was used in an assault or the commission of a crime.

Like a lot of other issues, government went from being ridiculously lax, to insanely vigorous over a short period of time. Prosecutors have no interest in talking to the parties in involved, and in my case even the domestic violence counselor said I shouldn't be prosecuted. But she knew my job was on the line and I've have to plead if she leveled charges. Now I can't own a gun for the rest of my life? Although no one is actually doing a damn thing to enforce this. What a bunch of crap.

As a woman who has gone through domestic abuse, I believe I can speak to this issue with a unique perspective. This is unconstitutional and oversteps legsal boundaries. It is also singularly ineefective, not to mention unfair. If a man, as a 19 year old, once was found guilty of domestic violence, long before this law took effect, even 40, 50, 60 years later, he cannot exercise his Second Amendment rights. That is simply inexcusable. Punish the deed, not whatever weapon might be used in the deed. One cannot save the victims of domestic violence this way - criminals are, by definition, not going to follow the law. It is law-abiding citizens, who have paid for whatever crime they may have once committed, who suffer now. Repeal Section 658 of Public Law 104-208!

I support it in the fact that I made a mistake at 18 and I got in an arguement with my mom and threw a remote and hit her in the back. Left a small red mark. I was charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury Family Violence. Now because of that at 20 I cannot join the Armed Forces because I cannot lawfully handle a gun. That is no right in my opinion. I just wanna join the military and start my career off right but I can't.

I support this petition 100%!!! In early 1997 my husband(now divorced) had a disagreement; he thought it was ok for his family to bad mouth me and I disagreed. At any rate, it became physical and his t-shirt got ripped as a result of my trying to use it to soften the fall as he pushed me down a flight of stairs. Needless to say, when the police arrived he had a torn t-shirt and my bruises didn't show for a couple of hours. I was charged with DV. After 13 years it is still haunting me.

I lend my support to this. My mother was in an abusive relationship in which the man threatened to sodomize me and hire people to physically assault my grandmother and laid out plans to carry through with such threats. She then bought a gun and shot him. She gained no charges from this incident, which occurred in 1992. Had she committed this 3 years later, she would have been convicted. This law is an abomination.

I think if there's abuse in the relationship, physical, or threats with weapons then the person should lose the right to own a gun. I lost my right because I did property damage, never threatened my wife. Because of the property damage she did get angry and hit me. She tried to tell the cops this, but they didn't care and she was labled the victim through and through. While she was hitting me though I lifted up to try and get her off of me, as I was bent over and covering myself trying to defend myself. Because I did this they tried to charge me with 3rd degree assault on top of criminal mischief. I guess you're allowed to beat someone if they mess with your property without any consequence.

I don't understand why this should effect me protecting my home. Being actually charged with domestic violence is one thing, but the final judgement was fighting in public. This happens everyday at school, work, and on military installations. Soon America will be defenseless.

I support this petition. My rights and freedoms will never be taken away as long as I live! A bunch of good men died in wars for us to have the right to keep and bear arms. Aman or woman that gets angry and throws a telephone out in the yard DOES NOT have a thing to do with gun violence! There are people that dont need guns, but people that experience a human emotion wich is normal, like a angry wife that never been in trouble in her life and throws water in her husbands face is not a danger to society. This is simply an excuse to take away guns from Americans. This is one of those anti-American laws that if its not repealed, it should be ignored! Thank God for the NRA!

I support this petition. Everyone makes mistakes. As a soldier, I know how stressful military life can be. It is easy for the "brass" and politicians to use the L. amendment, but it doesn't address or resolve the real issue surrounding the domestic violence. Try treating the illness before trying an individual who likely needs counseling. Some people need the military to support their families, and have no higher education or experience in any other field. How many unemployable people will be the result of this unconstitutional act? Doesn't it stand to reason that anyone affected by the L. amendment is likely to end up in a worse situation than before; and, if so, doesn't it also stand to reason that the stress and hoplessness of that situation could lead to further violence?

I am be released from the National Guard due to the fact that i have a domestic misdemeanor against me from five years ago.Yet I was able to get in the military in 2004. Yes i committed a crime, and i did my time and took anger management classes, and passed. So why is it that i cannot serve my country? I cannot re-enlist or extend because of Lautenburg. I understand what he was tring to due, but it was doen in a very wrong way. Especially when it was put in the Treasury-Postal portion of the bill?

I support this petition. i served in the USMC 2nd Recon. I killed for my country. 10 years later I had several problems as with the law. i was convicted for a 4th degree misdemaeanor domestic violence. threatening dv which means I had the ability to commit dv but not do such a thing. My wife hit me 3x in the face and splahed boiling water at me. she was never touched and claim she was the evidence lack such however the courts in Ohio knew this and decided that the lack evidence was not domestic violence in its true form. however political agenda the prosecutor needed threatening dv means I have the potential. What crap. My lawyer recieves his fee and was willing to sacrifice my rights because it was simple to or he lacked the understanding of what the ramifications were. I wanted t apply for the border patrol which I believe I would be top notch for which the government has trained before. But I am a piece of **** as acitizen because I have political ****ers who have probably never had to protect there country or brothers in arms. We are not a free country burt a mockery of our founding fathers to achieve political favor or strwnghten big brohter to its full tuition. I am a college graduate and my wife is sincerely upset the the prosecutors mislead her decision of prosecution even when she refused to after the fact.

As stated before, many defendants did not ever imagine that this law would have been enacted. It precludes good hard working Americans from joining the military and becoming peace officers. With the war on terror and eminent attack on U.S soil, we need every able body to do his/her part. Having a misdemeanor for domestice violence is quite broad. These misdemeanors are given for shoving, pushing, or simply protecting yourself. Wake up people. This law does nothing to stop domestic violence.

not only does the amendment overstep its boundaries, but it also does countless damage to what americans believe to be thier freedoms granted to them by the constitution, i worry that over the years federal lawmakers will pick and pick and pick until americans are left with little to no rights at all, unless the government says so. we did not build this country with the citizens blood and sweat, to watch a bunch of spoiled brats destroy our hard earned freedoms, states should be the ones who decide, they have a more hands on view of thier own people. personally i believe that people should be given a chance to make the wrongs in thier lives right, not punish them for the rest of thier lives upon the first offense.

No doubt many people who have plead guilty or nolo contendre to Class A misdomeanor were not advised by their Counsel or the Court that they would lose their 2nd Amendment rights and that this lack of information has resulted in many more convictions through straight propation or deferred adjudication then would have otherwise occured. As for the ex post facto element, there is good reason it should be repealed on that alone, since those who were effected had no way of knowing the future consequence of their action in regards to their loss of 2nd Amendment rights. One of the primary differences between a misdemeantor and a felony conviction has always been the loss of some or all Civil Rights. The Lautenburg Act blurs this very important distinction. Finally, Lautenberg set a dangerous precedent, if not several of them. How would you like to wake up next week and find that you had lost your right to bear arms because you got a drunk driving charge 20 years ago? Think it couldn't happen? Think again. It is no different then what has been done here, and already the DWI laws are putting firearms restrictions on first time DWI offenders.
