Allow twins a chance to participate in the library!

Created by Erica McCabe on 6 May 2008 @ 10:36:07 AM

The policy at the Eastern Monroe Public Library for 3 and under requires one child per adult for any programs in that age group. They will allow children below three to attend the story time geared to the 3 - 5 year old crowd with no restrictions despite the safety and liability issues there!

The statement I received from the Director of Youth Services is that the programs are "hands on." I explained that this program is the ONLY one in the area that does not have an exclusion for multiples. I cited Gymboree, Kindermusik, Music Together, Borders Story Time, the Roller Rink and the Ice House in Bethlehem that have the one child rule but allow for twins to attend. The understanding that developmentally twins are typically on the same level and would typically be interested (or not) in similar things and is not comparable to having siblings of a 9 month or greater age span.

Their program is sponsored by tax and municipal dollars however they are excluding a major portion of the community in which they serve. By hosting a more allowable open story time geared towards a younger crowd without discriminatory or exclusionary practices and eliminating the 18 month and under = one child/one adult policy would be more inclusive in allowing more children to participate. More children = more money for the EMCL.

There will be a new program this fall and if we can influence the development of the program now, we have a chance at allowing multiples a chance to enjoy what our tax dollars are paying for.

56Teresa BroomeI don\'t think that the library should turn any child away

53Colleen GrayThat is discrimination. It is unfair to punish a child because they shared the womb with a brother or sister. Parents of twins have spent the twins whole lives taking care of two children at once, they will be fine.

46kendraThis is absolutely ridiculus. I am a mom of twins. I cannot believe that they would discriminate in such a fashion. Twins need exposure just as much as singletons do. I thought the library was for everyone??

44brenda ColemanWhy punish children just because they have a twin?
43cecilia daly
42Garlanda JoyceI think ALL children should be able to attend/participate in the library system. As long as the adult with them is monitoring both children then there is no issue. Parents of twins are fully aware that they have 2 kids to watch and help participate in activities and wouldn\'t bring them both if they couldn\'t properly supervise them.

39Judy MonroeI do understand having multiple children of different ages can be disruptive, but it is not as though there is any control over having twins and they should have the same rights as anyone else.

34Justine GarciaI am a mother of twins and find this very unfair. We pay as much as everyone else in taxees and shoulsn\'t be discriminated against because we had a multiple birth.
33Christopher KintzI believe that an exception should be created for the twins.
