The Light Bulb Project
Published April 20, 2007
This petition is directed towards the United States Congress, to immediately forward this proposed bill to the President of the United States. Congress may change this bill as they feel fit before forwarding it to the President of the United States to either veto or approve. The proposed bill states the following:
"By the time a year has passed after this bill is approved, all American citizens that use a majority of candescent light bulbs in their homes will be required to replace one candescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb within a year after this bill is passed. This does not only include in their homes, but all other active buildings that use active light bulbs that they own. This includes offices, and all other owned buildings that use active light bulbs. This includes schools, government buildings, office buildings, and etcetera. Those that cannot afford one will be supplied with one from the United States government. Those who cannot pay for one must show proof that they cannot pay for one in order to receive one from the US government. After the year’s time is up, local governments will be required to make sure all residents in their jurisdiction have replaced at least one candescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb by checking individual houses. Those areas where searching individual homes would be an impossible job must require each citizen in its jurisdiction to mail in proof to a specific address showing proof that they have followed this law. Those who are required to mail in proof that they have followed this law who do not mail their proof in will be subject to a fine. The amount of the fine is to be determined by the local government. Those who do not follow this law will be fined two hundred dollars. After replacing the candescent light bulb with a fluorescent light bulb, citizens will be required to maintain this light bulb, and replace it when necessary."
What is the reasoning behind this? Global Warming. In a few years time, the major effects of Global Warming will take effect, leaving countless species extinct or severely endangered, all the glaciers gone, record temperatures, life changing droughts which will effect every single person in the world, a third of the world being killed, and lastly the most important reason: The loss of ability for the Earth to sustain life as we know it.
Now, your probably thinking, “So what? This won’t affect me in my lifetime.” You’re sadly mistaken, unless you’re expecting to die within the next few years, in which this problem will be the problem of everyone you love, including your children’s and grandchildren’s.
So, you’ve heard of what you could do to stop Global Warming. Driving less, reducing your carbon emissions, properly insulating your home, using fuel efficient automobiles, etcetera. The fact is, no one really wants to change their lifestyle because of a problem which won’t affect them for years. Or you might be thinking, “How could one person change Global Warming? Why can’t I just not do this, and depend on everyone else to help?” Well, if everyone thought that way, we would have a problem- and everyone is. So by you picking up that one compact fluorescent light bulb, you’re saving the entire world.
Did you know that by replacing four hundred candescent light bulbs, we would be reducing carbon emissions by nearly a ton and a half? That’s a lot of carbon. Plus, compact fluorescent light bulbs last a lot longer than regular candescent light bulbs, which last on average roughly seven hundred fifty to one thousand hours. Fluorescent light bulbs last nearly fifty thousand hours. That’s approximately five years and four days. By using fluorescent light bulbs, you would be saving an incomparable price, compared to buying candescent bulbs.
If every US family replaced just one candescent light bulb with a fluorescent light bulb, it would reduce carbon emissions by nearly 90 billion pounds of greenhouse gases. That’s the same as taking 7.5k gas guzzling, polluting cars off of the road. This would reduce carbon emissions dramatically, to the point where it would drive environmentalists crazy with joy. This is one step closer to stopping Global Warming, and saving our planet.
Think about it. Would you rather change your lifestyle to solve this Global Warming problem, or would you rather take a small step, to make an even bigger change to Global Warming, by joining the fight to stop Global Warming, by merely changing a light bulb?
So, let's say you don't believe Global Warming is true. That’s perfectly fine. Then just sign this petition, change one bloody light bulb, and rejoice in never hearing another word out of any environmentalists mouth about Global Warming again about how severe it is.
So finally, after reading this entire petition, if you agree with everything stated in this petition, please sign this petition.
