SUPPORT FULL FEDERAL RECOGNITION FOR LUMBEE TRIBE

On June 7, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law the Lumbee
Act of 1956. The act simultaneously recognized and terminated the Lumbee
Tribe. While recognizing the Lumbee as Indians, “Nothing in this Act shall
make such Indians eligible for any services performed by the United States
for Indians because of their status as Indians, and none of the statutes
of the United States which affect Indians because of their status as
Indians shall be applicable to the Lumbee Indians.” As many of our
ancestors soon realized, the 1956 Lumbee Act withheld the full benefits of
federal recognition from the tribe. We were recognized as Indians but not
entitled to the full benefits of being Indian.

Wednesday, June 7, 2006 marks the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Lumbee Act.
