I am...in horrible shock. All that I stand for, that I was raised believing since birth about freedom has been utterly and disgustedly offended by this.
It was a decent idea to try and sought out the worst of the worst on LJ; however, that doesn't excuse what has happened to innocent users who have, in some cases, lost years of work due to 'mistaken deletion'. It isn't right!
I would prefer we not try to emulate such other works of fiction as 1984 or Fahrenheit 451. Things did not go well for those societies. I doubt ours would do better once we begin to clone their circumstances by cutting the throat of free speech even if the supposed goal is a worthy one.
I think people should be allowed to their right of free speech. By reading about pedophilia, incest, rape and the like is your choice. You chose to read it, and choose to write it. If you don't like to read it, then just ignore it, simple as that.
I am a believer in free speech and free choice for adults. Every site I have ever visited gave visible warnings against underage usage and also regarding content. I reserve the right to not read fanfiction I disapprove of rather than trampling upon the right to free speech.
I can't beleive they did this. I'm in shock. Livejournal was always a place I could go for the ultimate freedom of speech. Is there anywhere these god damn conservative a-holes won't f-up?
This isn' rational - it's a witch hunt, a temporary hysteria. This kind of conduct WILL be reversed. The harder the rational resist, the quicker this nonsense will be over.
While certainly within LJ's rights, these deletions were completely inappropriate for a company that claims to provide a medium of expression. Please remember: The lifeblood of this company is user-generated content. If LiveJournal does not back down on this blatant act of censorship (AND repair the damage), I urge you all to acknowledge it for what it IS and drop them like a sack of hammers.
I am not a member of any of the banned communities (to the best of my knowledge; I haven't looked at my info page THIS morning *wry smile*). However, I have several Friends (IRL and online) who participate in Harry Potter fanfic communities and the like. I object strenuously to the desecration of free speech by SixApart's actions in banning such communities without apparent thought and due process. I urge SixApart to undo their rash actions, and to either investigate more closely, or to leave interpretations of the law to those trained in doing so. Neither fanfic nor nursing breasts are illegal, and SixApart has overstepped their bounds in these matters.
I'm shocked that live journal would do this. I often visited some of the sites that were banned. I fear that other communities that I frequent often might be banned as well.
come ON livejournal! this is Ridiculous! Are you going to do this every time some twit goes all high and mighty on you? I'm sorry, but ... I seriously am ashamed to have a LJ right now...
As someone who has a friend that is an incest survivor; I'm shocked that ppl who are really reaching out for help or having serious commentary on the subject are being censored.
LJ-staffers, get you heads outta your asses please. There's a big difference between fandom and fictional characters and going out and molesting a child.
Livejournal might have just put the last nail in their coffin, as far as I'm concerned. The fact that they've targeted some journals and left others alone doesn't look like anything but a witchhunt.
There is a thing called freedom of speech and while many people may not agree with many plot points in fanfiction such as the social taboos that are mentioned in the petition they are a way for people to vent, those that don't like such things don't have to read them, however, that is no reason to ban them.
I think that the LiveJournal purge is a good idea but was not carried out efficiently. The idea of tracking internet predators to keep children safer is a good concept, but tracking people through their interests is not a good way to do it. Just because someone marks
Freedom of speech folks. Most of these sites have clear warnings of what is contained within so people who don't want to or shouldn't read it can easily avoid it.I am shocked and disappointed at what LJ has done. I was considering buying a permanent LJ account at the next sale, but I will now seriously reconsider it.
all accounts with some kind of 18-up stuff usually require confirmation of age to join, or have tons and TONS of warnings, making clear the contents. If your kid chooses to lie so he/she can see what they shouldn't, why are we to blame?
