According to an article published in the Journal of College Student Development, by Professor of Psychology at Northern Illinois University M. Christine Lovejoy, “Interpersonal relationships are an important aspect of college life.” (Lovejoy 594). The first relationship the college student form in their experience is with their roommates. Roommates can have either a positive or negative effect on students. Studies have shown that satisfaction with roommates in residence halls heightens the college experience, increases student academic performance, and maintains a better psychological development in students.

Miami University should try to make the experience of students as comfortable as possible and this would require them to implement a Roommate Compatibility Test on the Miami University Housing application. According to a 1991 study done by Carli, Ganley, and Pierce-Otay, random roommates who were dissimilar in their levels of social skills and maturity reported less satisfaction with their roommate (Lovejoy 594). Universities who ask questions regarding living habits have found that roommates are more satisfied with living together and form better relationships.

Miami University should take this step and help our student body live happily in Oxford. Miami need to wake up and help their students today! The evidence is undeniable that these tests will improve the standard of living in the residence halls and foster a better college experience for us.
