I am a fan. Nothing more and nothing less. I have been a fan of Smallville since the pilot first aired and more importantly, I have been a fan of Superman all of my life. Clark Kent is an iconic character that has captivated generations worldwide. I love the idea of a T.V. show that shows us how he grows into that amazing hero. However, lately there have been some issues on the show that deeply concerns me as a fan. Many people have told me that I am wasting my time bringing this to your attention, but I know that the creators of Smallville are different; they listen to the fans. They care about what we think and what we have to say. I come to you not as one person, but as a medium, the voice of many fans who passionately feel the way I feel.
I realize that this show is not the story of Superman. That's what makes it different; that's what makes it great. It's the story of Clark Kent finding his path to becoming Superman. But who is Clark Kent? Clark Kent is the most selfless being in the fictional relm. He never hesitates to put others before him. He sacrifices what it takes to put the good of mankind before his own wants and desires. He has always been portrayed as being confindent and strong. He is an upbeat and optomistic hero who takes not only joy, but pride in helping the people around him.
You have done a marvelous job showing how Clark Kent on Smallville is growing and learning. I really like how you introduced viewers to a more feeble and unsure Clark Kent in the begining and let us watch him develop into a more confident man. But now the show is coming to a crucial point in the Superman mythology. It's coming to an end. The Clark Kent on the show should be starting to resemble the iconic character that many fans know and love. However, this is not the case. Before I get started, I want you to know that I am not here to lecture you and say that you have done everything wrong and to tell you how it should be. I am not an angry mob. I am simply a fan who wants see the show at its full potential.
The Clark Kent on the show has seemed to digress on his path towards his destiny as of late. He sits away in his loft brooding about his life and wishing that he had more. This sounds more like Batman to me. Clark Kent would never waste his life away dwelling on what could have been. He faces his problems and moves on. He would never let his own fear rule him. Lately the show has been centered around drama and angst that shouldn't be the focus point of any Clark Kent reincarnation.
A lot of this drama, I hate to say, comes from the relationship between him and his childhood crush, Lana lang. Lana was always a very important person to Clark Kent. She was his first love. I think that you have protrayed this beautifully and I really like the changes that Lana Lang has gone through. It's different and intriguing. However, after over six years, I think that it is time for their romantic relationship to come to an end. Right now, Clana is only serving to make Clark look dependent, unsure, and very weak. It is also tarnishing the wonderful character of Lana Lang. It is turning her into a villian who knows that no matter how hard they try to make their relationship work, in the end it will only hurt Clark. This is not the Lana that I know. I cannot believe that she would be so willing to do this to the man that she loves. Present Clana is also ruining the lovable and innocent relationship that it once was. Yes, I was a supporter of Clana in the begining. It was a much needed storyline in the development of Clark Kent. Now, however, it is being dragged out and forced. It is making the show lose its main focus, which is to align this story with the mythology of the Clark Kent we all have known since before the show. There are many fans who still adore this relationship and I am not saying that their opinions do not matter. I am simply saying that it is time for change. It is time for other fans to be heard; the fans of Clark Kent and the man wgo he is destined to become.
Clana is also degrading the beloved character of Lois Lane. I love the way that she has been portrayed and hope that it continues. As a Clois supporter, I do not want to see Clark and Lois get together romantically on the show. I think that it is too soon. But I also think it is a very big disservice to both characters to make it appear as though he only ends up with Lois because he couldn't be with Lana. Lana is his first love, and while that's very important, Lois is and always will be his true love. It is that way in every version of Superman that has been told.
As iconic as Lois Lane is to Clark Kent, there is another aspect of his future life that is just as important. I'm sure that any fan of Superman knows that Clark Kent is a journalist for the Daily Planet. This was something that he loved and wanted to persue. It was also a handy way for him to hear about any danger before anyone else. However, from watching the show, one would never know this. He did work at the Torch in high school which was a lovely touch, but it seemed like he was forced into it and it was clear that it was not his love at that time in his life. Now he is becoming a man and must start thinking about what he wants to do with his life. You have showed Lois Lane's transition into the Daily Planet beautifully, but you may be forgetting one of their most important future employees.
But how would one address the problems stated above? I am not listing my own personal feelings and wants for the show, but only stating what I think is best for it. One cannot please every fan so what I think the best thing to do is to start by asking yourself, "What is in the best interest for Clark Kent, the future Superman?" I would start by removing the much dragged out Clana. I think that they should part on friendly terms and remain close friends and confidants but realize that they are no longer romanticaly attached to each other as they once were. I think it is important to have Clark Kent happily single for the rest of the show. It would take out the angst that is brining down the intergrity of it and allow him to focus on his friends, abilities, future, and destiny. It would also free up a lot of time to show other important story arcs, such as Lois Lane vs. Lex Luthor. Next, I want to see him start to devlop his love for writting, for uncovering the truth just like Lois has. It doesn't have to be fully portrayed, but at least get a movement in that direction started. I also think that it would be smart to show him starting to develop somewhat of a crush on Lois Lane. This will be a great way to explain why he suddenly falls head over heels for her when he returns from his training. But most importantly, I want to see a happy, optomistic, and confident Clark Kent. It is time that he grows into the persona that has become a beacon of light for many fans. I want to see his heroic side and see him take pride in it. I want to see his geeky and bumbling side and how his friends just roll their eyes at him when he laughs it off. I do not want to see Superman on the show because this is not that story, but I want to be able to make the connection, to see the resmeblence, to see the progress and growth and strength of the most beloved Superhero of all time.
I humbly thank you for your time,
Tally Smith
