Our locally brewed beer is one of the things that makes Oregon great. Proponents of this crushing tax should be ashamed. Why not tax imports- coffee for instance, or citrus fruit. Over taxing locally made goods will only send our already weakened economy into free fall.

Not only is this bad for consumers, but it has the potential to completely destroy local Oregon businesses from micro/craft breweries to bars, taverns and pubs that will have to pass the tax increase on to consumers. The proposed beer tax is in no way proportionate to the current wine tax here in Oregon. It unfairly singles out the beer industry and beer drinkers to pay for rehabilitation services while completely ignoring the impact cheap wine and liquor have on the same population. Not to mention, why on earth does the state want to squelch an emerging and growing industry in the state in the middle of one of the worst recessions? Seems like bad policy to drive employers, employees and tax revenue out of the state at a time when we need it more than ever. Do not support this tax.

I support this petition because Oregon is a place where craft brewing thrives. Unfortunately, this bill will alleviate that distinction, and unnecessarily burden one of the shining stars of Oregon's business economy - Craft Brewers - with a disproportionate burden of taxes. Additionally, I think that there are other more relevant and significant sources of revenue that this state can tap into that will not as directly affect the post end consumer and citizenry quite so harshly, and will not create such incredibly disproportionate taxation.
