I am writing this in regard to an incident that has taken place on the campus of Middlebury College in Vermont. An African American Student named O’Neil Walker has been suspended by the college indefinitely for allegedly trespassing in the room of white student, David Hawkins. Mr. Walker’s two hearings were closed to the public and not all of the details of the hearings have been disclosed to the public. The colleges claims that procedure was followed but how can we know this if we do not even know what happened in the hearing. Mr. Walker has repeatedly claimed his innocence. In addition, Walker does not fit the description of the intruder that Hawkins originally gave to authorities at Middlebury College yet he was still charged. I am hoping that you will sign this petition to show support for Mr. Walker and to let Middlebury and America know that injstice will not be tolerated or ignored. Right now we do not know all of the details of this case but it seems as if an innocent young man is being denied his degree because of uncertain evidence. We do not know if this is the case because Middlebury will not release all the records concerning this case. We have come so far as a people and a nation and for this to still happen in 2005 is sign that much still needs to be done. Thank you for your concern in this matter.
