As the supervisor of an animal shelter in Chicago, I see the severe animal overpopulation problem we have, partially as a result of the public buying from pet stores supplied by puppy mills. It is overwhelming and, as a result, over 30,000 animals are euthanized in Chicago ALONE every year due to a lack of homes for all of them.
Dear Oprah - Imagine being kept in a cage, with little or no human ccontact, and being forced to have babies after babies every few months. Then imagine having those babies taken away from you and sold into slavery. Those mothers are certainly damaged by that, and their offspring are never nurtured or given a chance to lead fullfilling lives, haunted by their past and uncertain about each waking moment. One who does not know the joy and unconditional love of a faithful canine companion might say "They are just dogs" but animal lovers know they are so much more because they offer us a glimpse into our own souls by how we treat them and learn from them how to treat each other. If anyone can make a difference, you would be the one to do it. I am a avid believer in rescuing animals. I would be the first to go to a shelter and rescue an animal which we know has a short life span if not adopted. Puppy Mills are in fact slaughter houses, it may take a while, but the outcome is the same. They are slaughtered by the pure fact of abuse, neglect, and outright malicious acts of the humans that breed them.
This is an issue that should be talked about loudly and at length. Your show is the perfect vehicle to educate the public about this horrible practice. As a rescuer I see the results of puppy mills on a daily basis. PLEASE help us to stop this crime against animals
Please help these poor puppys from abuse by exposing puppy mills. So many people watch your show and you could really help inform people of the horrid conditions of puppy mills.
Oprah knowing what an animal lover you are and knowing the big caring generous heart you have won`t you please speak for those who cannot--- expose the horrific puppy mills and save some of Gods creatures from the kill shelters where so many mill dogs end up. I thank you but especially all the poor dogs miserabley exisiting in puppy mills thank you.
As horrendous as this is it needs to be seen by America. People are unaware-they go to pet shops and ooh and ahh over animals that can not tell them of their horrors. Please stop this inhumanity!!

People will continue to purchase puppy mill puppies and keep this atrocious, vicious cycle going, unless we can educate the general public to the truth. Please Help.
Not only Puppy mills,also what about the food they eat and the lack of federal regulation and the fact that everything that we as humans don't eat they the dogs do, encluding the use of euthanized cats and dogs. Big need for this type of education as well.
the puppymills need to be stopped. Therre is a big difference between carefully informed breeders who search dilligently for excellent homes for their puppies and "puppy farms" where the dogs are abused and then 'thrown away" when they are no longer when they are no longer useful
As human beings we seem to believe that animals are a "lesser" being, a disposable commodity.
Animals are a part of the divine whole and have a right to life, happiness and security on this earth.
Humans have long exploited and destroyed animal life, believing the human to be the superior being.
As a Animal Communicator I can assure you that animals have their own thoughts, feelings, emotions and point of view, and serve man as a friend, teacher, and guide.
Because of their ability to reason humans see themselves as superior beings in the cosmic scheme of things. All of creation is thus thought to be a divine gift for human disposal and explotation, to further exalt man's "exalted status".
I urge you to help expose this cruel explotation of animals.

Please Oprah, this is a crime what is being done to these animals. I rescue abandoned/orphaned kittens and know some of the suffering.These people must be stopped!
Oprah, You are a woman among woman and a great heart among hearts. Please help us expose the puppymills for the evil and the suffering creatures they persecute. This is a corrupt and evil way to make money at these poor little creatures expense. These babies never know love, tenderness or someone to love in return.
The puppy mill issue is not far from the emotional abuse one. Both are about mistreatment at the hands of unenlightened people. America would be more willing to adopt animals if they realized that stats. Do it!
Oprah, please help spread the word about puppy mills. I have two puppies that were rescued from a puppy mill. The breeders kept the dogs in hamster cages and bred as often as possible. The Animal Shelters are so over crowded with pets just waiting for a good home. Please encourage everyone to adopt from a shelter and do their part to keep the animal population under control.

Last week I went to Missouri, the heart of puppy mills and animal auctions, to rescue nine Saint Bernards. Puppy mill dogs are truly prisoners of greed and the conditions they are forced to live in is deplorable. Nine dogs rescued in comparison to over 500,000 puppies bred annually by these mass breeding operations is a dismal ratio. The collective efforts of all the animal welfare and rescue organizations combined, has not been sucessful in stopping these mass breeders.
Puppy mill dogs are sold to pet stores and other similar retail outlets. Consumer demand for pure bred puppies easily purchased at convienent locations, fuels and perpetuates the puppy mill industry.
Sadly these dogs are not regulated or protected by the Animal Welfare Act. USDA exempts commercial dog breeders and retail pet stores that sell directly to the public from compliance with the mandated humane treatment and handling standards of the AWA.
This holiday season, please expose the myth of the "puppy in the window". Raising public awareness, educating and targeting the consumer will help stop the inhumane mass production and exportation of puppies to an unregulated retail pet industry.

Please help us inform the public! I adopted one of these precious mill dogs from a rescue, and each time I look at her, I think about what must have been done to her to make her so afraid. It makes me wonder HOW CAN ANYONE BE SO CRUEL TO ONE SO DEFENSELESS?
