When I was 16, I worked at a Doctor Pet Center. My first day, a puppy died in the arms of a co-worker. Puppy mill dogs are sick and mis-treated. Moms are kept pregnant or nursing all the time. It's a horrible life, and so unnecessary when 10 Million animals die each year in our shelters. Please Oprah, bring light to this situation!

The issue of puppies being bred for profit in dispicable conditions, then transported (often sick) to pet stores for sale many of which end up in "rescues" across the country, needs a light of truth shone upon it. You are that light. You can make a tremendous difference in this situation; a difference for the adults, often bred near to death and in deplorable conditions and often with serious medical issues (many of which are passed on to unsuspecting families), and moreover to the number of animals killed (some by gas, some by gun, some by neglect/abuse, and some by lethal injection) in the millions each year. animals that did not ask for this, and which do not belong in these circumstances. You can really help, Oprah. Please won't you consider this for a show? It will be tearful and a heartbender, but an opportunity to save thousands of lives. Best wishes to you.

Please help stop puppymills. You can make such a big difference in the lives of animals. This inhumane practice needs to be exposed and all puppy mills shut down. When they no longer have customers, the abuse can finally stop.

as mom to a rescued Cairn Terrier who was a puppy mill product, these dogs are often full of problems that dogs bread by a reputable breeder would not have. Barney has numerous allergies and was a mess when I got him, but he's fine now due to good veterinary care (inlcuding being a cancer survivor at 15 years of age!) He's my 'baby boy and I love him dearly, but I hate to see what they do in puppy mills. Only a fortunate few are adopted. If you were to contact Colonel Potter's Cairn Terrier Rescue page, you'd get a glimpse into the scope of the problem. These puppy mills MUST be stamped out as should stores that sell live puppies. They are just as bad and often worse. Puppies die on the way to these stores. NO ONE SHOULD EVER buy a puppy from a so-called pet store. The two major chains do not sell animals but do offer space for adoption organizations.

Oprah, please consider doing a show on the horrors of puppy mills. As the owner of a German Shepherd that came from one I can tell you that my dog is an example of why they should be shut down. Although I love my dog she is fear aggressive and an absolute scary creature to live with. I got her at nine weeks and she has been through obedience class three times and still has no manners and no one can get near her(other than me and my grandchildren). I feel bad as I have tried my very best to train and teach her good manners to no avail. I also am involved in GSD Rescue and I see what happens to so many good dogs every day. Please consider doing a show on the very serious problem that animals face everyday.

Most puppies sold in pet stores come from miserable places called "puppy mills," where breeding animals spend lonely lives locked in cages, producing litter after litter. They usually have no bedding, little protection from the elements, little or no veterinary care, and no human companionship. Because there is so little concern for the animals—profit is the puppy mill owner’s goal—many puppies have serious health problems. Unsuspecting people who buy from pet stores may spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars in veterinary care. People who buy puppies from pet stores enable puppy mills to continue their despicable trade. Meanwhile, millions of homeless dogs are killed in shelters every year. Those who can give a dog a good home should visit a local animal shelter and adopt.

I am a clinical social worker who also has an interest in the animal kingdom. The inhumane, institutionalized breeding of dogs in puppy mills is a hideous reflection of our society's cavalier attitude toward life (NOT helped by our recent re-election of George Bush, I might add). Equally concerning is the fact that we condone this kind of torture and objectification of creatures which we cultivated to be dependent upon us. Could this be a stronger commentary on our perpetuation of the mentality of abuse in our nation? I URGE you to expose the horror of these pupy mills. If you SAW the animals that were never allowed to touch the ground, never allowed to experience the freedom of a moment's play, you would shrink in horro. I have transported many rescued dogs. It is heartbreaking to see how OLD they behve when they are barely a yer or two old, merely because they have never moved beyond the confines of their cage, stacked on top of other cages full of dogs. And if the dog you rescue happens to be one of the breeders, you will see a hearybreakingly depleted spirit. I always have a dog with me in my psychotherapy office. My clients receive deep and broad comfort and enjoyment merely by sharing space with this animal. We are more than willing to put this kind of creature through ANYTHING for the purpose of providing us pleasure, or outlet of some sort. They deserve MUCH more. They GIVE much more.

Dear Oprah, As a private dog rescuer, I can attest first hand to the atrocities that befall our four footed friends being bred to death in puppy mills. Living in squalor and pain only to be force bred over and over again while living in a tiny cage just to meet the demands of an ignorant public who have no idea where their adorable puppy with all of it's health problems came from. You are very well respected and you have an incredible voice among the people. Please, with your help, we can expose these horrible puppy factories and educate the public to help end this tragic cycle. I would love to assist you in any way possible in your research, just say the word and thousands of rescuers will be at your beck and call to help spread this message. Sincerely, Jan Miller

She was the saddest, the skinniest, and the sickest dog I have ever seen and I wasn't even sure if she was going to make it through the first night. For the first 3 months she wouldn't let anybody near her, didn't even come to me when I offered food. Today, I'm THE ONLY person she let's near her, that's how deep her scars are. I have long admired the good work you do. Please think about doing a show on the puppymill industry that supplies those cute puppies in the pet stores. Mills are literally dog factories. Females are bred before they are mature and rebred again and again until they are worn out. When they can no longer produce litters some are dumped into the countryside to fend for themselves, others surrendered to shelters, and yet others are simply shot (a bullet is cheaper than euthanasia). We need to educate people about this horrific industry and encourage them to find pets in shelters and through Rescue Groups such as the one I volunteer for - the Col.Potter Cairn Rescue Network
