I have been involved with all breed rescues for almost 10 years now. Oprah could do a real public service by educating people about puppy mills and backyard breeders as well as the availability of purebred dogs through purebred and all breed rescues. Last year I was involved with over 120 purebred dogs identified in the Henrico County (VA) Animal Shelter. People need to be educated about the importance of researching breeds and breeders. Certainly Oprah did research before acquiring her purebred dogs. I could keep going... suffice to say that I support the petition.

Jo Ann Wagner said 11/05/04, 5:06 am (verified)
We've seen your love for Cocker Spaniels. They, too, are sold in pet stores and are primarily the product of puppy mills. The public needs to understand that by purchasing pet store puppies, they are enabling the puppy mills to stay in business. And puppy mills are only about business. There is little or no concern for the animal itself. It's merely livestock. And once the breeding female is past her prime, oftentimes she is sold at auction -- like used property. Please help expose the horrid conditions in which these animals are forced to exist.

I am a vet student, and it sick and sad that these backyard breeders continue to make money. Pet stores get/sell unhealthy pups and we all feel bad when we look into those sad little eyes. So we naturally want to take one home. Sadly, many pups are already sick and cost the new owners lots of money and anguish, often to not be able to be saved from such diseases as parvo virus or pneumonia. It's a matter of supply and demand. As long as people keep buying from irreputable source, they will continue to breed.

If you have never had the chance to see what conditions, how the puppies & their mother are treated, you must so then you will know & understand why this list consists of animal lovers that need your help. Puppy Mills need to be non existant. Dogs are in cages, stacked on top of one another, feces & urine that hits the dogs that are underneath, dogs are never loved, no medical attention, some can not even walk they have been in cages all of their lives. PLEASE HELP & EXPOSE PUPPY MILLS SO HOPEFULLY AN AMENDMENT CAN BE PASSED TO OUTLAW PUPPY MILLS.

If someone brought you proof that an orphanage had taken children of all races and ages, shoved a pipe down their throats to ruin their vocal cords so they couldn't make any noise, forced them to live in small cages where there was no bathroom or even a clean place to eat, provided no medical care at all and forced them to have children of their own as soon as they were able to reproduce would you run do a story on it? Well, that's exactly what happens to puppy mill dogs DAILY, only because they are animals and can't speak for themselves producers like yourselves don't think it's newsworthy. Do the voiceless animals a favor and show America what a puppy mill dog has to endure.

Hi Oprah, I think with you going and doing an investigation, that more people will understand how important it is not to buy from Pet Stores that buy their puppies from a puppy broker. Because most of the puppies they get are bought from breeders who are only producing puppies to supply the stores. These puppies are not carefully screened to make sure that they are healthy, and will go on to live long healthy lives. They are rarely shown, to prove that what is being produced fits the standard to the breed itself. If people were more aware on how the dogs had to live, they wouldn't buy from petshops. I have seen where toy dogs like a Yorkshire Terrier or even your beloved breed the Cocker Spaniel are in such small cages and not groomed that their fur has become so long and matted that they are literally trapped at one side of the cage because their hair has grown through the wire, and matted with hair below it, so it can't even get up to stretch it's legs. And at times not even to drink some water or eat and has a litter of puppies it's nursing. The dog has had to urinate and defecate in the same place where their little rumps are so raced up and bleeding because of the urine and feces on them. No more fur there cause the acid from the urine has eaten it all up. And what happens to these dogs after they can no longer produce any puppies the majority are put to sleep, never to have known the loving caress of a human. Not even to touch some grass to roll around in. For my belief GOD has given us care over these animals, and they are here for us as companions and helpers. Not to live out their lives trapped in a cage. I pray that you will be able to help!!!
