because dogs have a right to a reasonable amount of exercise as long as it is done in a responsible fashion and under the supervision of their owners, and it is not intrusive to other visitors to our Parks and most people are not in the parks during the early morning hours and those that are, do not mind the relaxed privileges dog owners are afforded by the Parks Dept.

Jeanne Ameres said 08/07/06, 3:34 pm (verified)
A dog park within Juniper Valley would be a great solution to both the dog owners and for people who do not own a dog. It gives the dog owners a place where they can enjoy their dogs off the leash and having the dogs socialize with other dogs. I support this petition 100%. Park are for everyone to enjoy, including the four legged kind.

I support this petition, because off-leash priviledges during off peak hours is an important part of the quality of life in the city. Dogs learn best how to interact with each other off-leash. I have never seen a dog fight in Central Park during off peak hours. What I do see are happy dogs and happy owners. Because of off-leash priviledges, the early morning hours in Central Park are joyful and a great antidote to the stress of city living.

Because of leash time in the parks is a vital part of the mental and physical well being of the millions of dogs (and their owners!) that live with us in this city. Aggression in dogs will increase if they are not allowed to socialize and exercise freely. There are not enough dog runs in this city and many are too small to be an adequate alternative. It seems like the few incidents documented against dogs is not reason enough to recind privledges for all. When a car and driver hit a person in a street to we try to ban all driving on local streets or just penalize the individual? Lets be cautious and responsible. Recinding off leash is a over-reaction that will do more damage than good!

because off-leash privileges in city parks during off-peak hours is a reasonable balance of use of public land. Denying law abiding, tax paying New Yorkers and their dogs usage of parks in a way that is necessary to the well-being of their pets, is punishing all dogs and owners for the negligence of a few and will do little to stop the problems that occur with careless owners.
#269

Kelly McCarthy said 08/05/06, 1:25 am (verified)
Off-leash dog privileges during off-peak NYC park hours is a reasonable balance and compromise. As dog-owners who visit NYC parks frequently, we appreciate and respect the off-leash privileges. With rights come responsibilities, and most dog-owners live up to these responsibilites. Please do not abolish off-leash hours in NYC parks. Thank you.

How long before children are banned from parks???? Dogs deserve to have fun. Irresponsible owners are the problem not the dogs. Keep them free!

I support this petition because dogs are a very important part of our lives. They provide physical and emotional support to many, as well as being considered an important part of our families. Pets belong in parks as much as any person does, and as a tax paying citizen, I should have the same rights as anyone else to go to the park together with any of my family members; this includes my dog.

because those of us with dogs have the right to enjoy the park the way that people with bikes, skates, scooters, kids, etc. do. The vast majority of us who enjoy the privilege of being able to play with our dogs off-leash, are responsible. We spay and neuter our animals, we pay to license our dog, we adhere to the poop laws, the laws governing where we can take our dog.

Excerise is necessary for a well behaved dog. Without room to run, quality of life will be affected for all, bored dogs lead to destuctive behaviour and excessive barking. Also, the more people out in the parks, the safer they are.

I support this petition because the current enforcement policy works. It provides a safer, saner lifestyle for dogs and people. To restrain dogs on-leash at all times will cause more problems, not fewers. Victims of rare instances have recourse against irresponsible dog owners if so proven. Do not despotically penalize all responsible dog owners and dogs for the acts of the very few irresponsible owners.

dogs and their owners need a space to allow them to get exercise in New York. Also the more laws we inact against dogs the less dogs that will be adopted from shelters around New York as it makes it more and more difficult and unfriendly to own a dog in New York.
