I support this petition because I am a responsible dog owner and so are many other people. The only joy and quality time my dog and I have is walking and playing at the park every morning. As it is there are too many restrictions for people with dogs in NYC.
The dog owners that walk their dogs in the parks off leash each morning and night are responsible dog owners (unlike those found in dog parks). They have well socialized dogs that can be off leash in wide open spaces and be under control. Losing the ability for dogs to run free would create a city full of angry, aggressive animals that do not have a chance to be dogs.
Dogs need freedom and play time as much as children do, but dogs are kept away from playgrounds. A civilized, caring New York would value the animals who provide love, support and companionship to many, many New Yorkers, and would allow times for dog-owners to enjoy the park with their loved ones just as parents can enjoy playgrounds with their little charges. More dogs = more love = a better New York.
but not just because I am a dog owner. As Tupper Thomas from Prospect Park (my local park) has pointed out, one of the reasons our parks are safer for everyone is because "dog people" use the parks often, are aware of their surroundings, and cooperate with the police to maintain a safe and pleasant environment. Perhaps we should eliminate all those noisy children, and those unsightly garbage pails and all that dirt and those leaf dropping trees (very messy). Maybe it's time to pave over the grass (imagine how much money would be saved not having to mow). When do we stop? Save the freedom that dog owners have to enjoy and the sense of security they bring.
our dogs need some freedom to run and play. off-leash hours are limited enough so that other people are not inconvenienced. our healthy happy dogs add joy to our city.
I support this petition because I am a New York city voter and tax payer who owns a dog. Dogs need exercise and socialization. The established dog runs are too small and do not have grass for dogs to roll in or space to realy run.
Because It is important that friendly
dogs are able to socialize with
like dogs. The freedon it allows a city
dog to run around with other dogs, fetch balls or
just hang out making friends with
a set pack of dogs is a great enjoyment
for both dog and owner. I am for dog owners
being 100% responsible for the actions of
thier dogs. That means no digging deep holes, picking
up after thier dogs and paying medical bills if their dog
inadvertently injures another dog.
When did dogs become Public Enemy Number One? The removal of all off-leash time in the parks, is now beginning to reflect the slow suffocation of all our freedoms in this country. It is representative of the erosion of our Constitutional Rights and well as that of our sweet canine companions. It is a sad commentary on where we are headed. Soon we will become the total antiseptic society george Orwell envisioned.
Off leash hours are important for the well being and health of our pets, and are limited enough that people can avoid the parks at those hours if they don't like it.
My dogs are like family members and there should be places people can enjoy the company of their pets outside of the confines of small apartments. Secondly, dogs need exercise just as much as people do. Having a dog park makes my neighborhood far more enjoyable!

Parks need to support different constituencies. Blanket rules that marginalize a single group don't respect all the people. And isn't this what we're all supposed to be about?
It's outrageous that this lawsuit is allowed to be brought into the courtrooms. The dog parks have lowered crime in many areas, have been an asset to the community as a whole, and have allowed people to own dogs in a city in which it is very difficult to own animals. Having dog parks available to New Yorkers has helped the NYC shelters get more dogs adopted, which lowers the rate of overpopulation in the city animal shelters. Off-leash hours allow people to safely interact with their pets, away from others. How is this a problem?
I believe dogs need the kind of exercise they can only get off leash. It's cruel to keep them on a leash all the time especially considering New York's small apartments. Also, a well socialized and exercised dog is better behaved and safer to be around.
It is important for dogs to get excersize. Also creating an area for dogs helps them socialize with both people and other dogs. A well socialized dog is friendlier and therefore much less likely to attack, bite or harm anyone in any way. Dog runs are fenced in keeping dogs away from anyone who doesn't want to be near them creating a safe and secure place for dogs and people.
as a dog owner living in NYC, because off leash shows that we New Yorkers support positive life styles; not just those of the over-privleged who are looking for some political gain at the expense of the people.
if people dont have anything better to do with their energy than try to get rid of dogs in parks then they should email me 'cause there's quite a few more important problems in new york. goodness gracious.
Look @ the stats: since off leash rules/dog runs started dog bites are DRAMATICALLY down in NYC. A socialized dog is a better behaved dog. Also, they keep the parks safer by there being a presence there each night of adults.
Lastly, the parks themselves are kept cleaner by the dog owners than anyone else. I walk by many parks each day, the majority of the debris has NOTHING to do with any dog...
because I am a taxpayer and believe that if I commit no infraction, I should not be punished. People who get up that early to replenish their spirit with a long walk in a quiet park, and make sure their dogs are well excercised and healthy are NOT the type of people to be negligent about the dog's behavior. I take my dog there so she will be a peaceful apartment dweller for the rest of the day. It is my favorite time and favorite place in my city. Please don't take it away from us. If you do, you will have one less tax payer for sure.
BECAUSE DOG OWNERS AND THEIR PETS ARE OUT AND ABOUT IN THE PARK IN THE EARLY MORNING "OFF LEASH" TIME WHEN MOST NEW YORKERS ARE STILL IN BED. OUR PRESENCE BRINGS LIFE TO THE PARK AND LIKELY WARDS OFF SOME OF THE CRIMINAL ELEMENT THAT MAY LURK ABOUT AT THAT HOUR. THAT'S JUST ONE OF MANY REASONS WHY DOG OWNERS AND D0GS ARE GOOD FOR NY AND GOOD FOR THE PARK AND SHOULD CONTINUE TO HAVE A RIGHT TO THIS SMALL WINDOW OF OFF LEASH TIME.
If the Park's Commissioner’s policy of allowing dogs to be off-leash at certain times in certain parks were to be revoked, many dogs would no longer able to interact off-leash in the City’s parks. I believe that this lack of off-leash recreation opportunities would lead to an increase in anti-social behavior among some City dogs.
Allowing dogs off leash in Central Park during the early hour is a wonderful experience for the dogs and their owners at a time when it causes minimal inconveniece to other visitors.
socialized dogs are better behaved, healthier, and happier. Being off leash enables socialization and allows dogs to be dogs. They thrive and learn from interacting with other canines, and to deny them this basic need is unacceptable.
