BSL is wrong.
There are no bad dogs, only bad dog owners!
I love my pits and will never let them go. Their main goal in life is to PLEASE their owners.
BSL is expensive and it is a volation of our rights! Don't take pets from responsible owners because irresponsible owners let their dogs control them! Its all about educating the public, training and socialization of the animals! Do whats right for EVERYONE PUNISH THE DEED NOT THE BREED! Hold the owners responsible!
I totally disagree with this, I just hope they don't go after my dog next, my poodle, in fact I know more aggressive, overprotective poodles than I do pits.
You can not outlaw one breed. There are numerous other breeds that have been known to show aggression toward humans, dalmations, chows, Rotweiler's and the list goes on. Every pit bull I have ever known loves people. It is the owner that trains the dog to be aggressive, which you can do to any breed.
I have adopted 2 loving pit bulls, 1 male, 1 female, both which have been sterilized, socialized & vaccinated. They have a fenced yard & 4 hours of personal attention each day before retiring to their crates at night. I read where Cody's Nana(the child in Moore)stated the dog owners in this tragic situation had 10 pit bulls & none of them had ever been to the vet. Now Mr. Wesselhoft, Wouldn't you say that is irresponsible ownership. I love my canine companions & would not be opposed to some regulations but to ban & slaughter the breed into extinction I am totally against. Obviously, Mr. Wesselhoft you are not a dog lover. I bet you are a cat man!!!
Hey Jason, do you realize this petition could never even be considered valid? No last names, address, or even valid email address is required. I could sit here and make up 10,000 names and email address and sign it. Its a Joke!
It was very unfortunate for the little boy from Moore. But my dogs didn't do it, nor did my mother in laws dogs or my sister inlaws dogs. The owner of the dogs that hurt that little boy should be held reponsible not the dogs. I am wondering if, god forbid, my child grows up and kills someone, should we put a ban on all pregnancies too? I mean, we have to stop the violence and who knows if the mext baby born will be a killer. It's just common sense.
What Idiots!:
"488 Don Hughes I feel these Pit TerrierS SHOULD be banned for the safety of our citizens. These dogs serve no purpose but to fight & mame."
"487 Diane S Doty I agree on Banning Pit Bulls, because the pit bulls are too criminals."
Did they realize that despite their typical, media fed idiot comments - they just signed a petition to STOP the bill??
These are the kind of people that pit bull owners are up against - reactionary, point the finger, "better than you" types.
My dog has been the protype of what all dogs, not just pit bulls, should be.
My pit bull is the best dog I have ever owned. He is loving and loyal and he loves other people. Other dogs have had their turn to be the "the most dangerous dog ever" in the eyes of the media and the public who gets all of their information from the media. Unfortunately, it is apparently the pit bull's turn, but wouldn't it be better to create a law that addresses the real issue? There are many excellent examples of existing laws pertaining to vicious dogs (there are examples in ANY breed) and irresponsible dog ownership. These are laws built to last because they don't address a temporary craze but address criminal behavior as it occurs.
I own a 2 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, also known in Europe as the " Nanny Dog" . The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is the most utilized dog in Europe as helper dogs for people with disabilities. Lumping an entire group of dogs together based upon physical characteristics rather than actually targeting specific breeds betrays ignorance and calls into question all of the statistics that the pro-ban camp trots out.
I am a proud owner of two beautiful pit bulls. I recently adopted my male from the local animal shelter. He is 8 months old. My husband was raised with pit bulls and my children ages 3 and 9 are being raised with pit bulls. My in laws have two and we have had two others besides the ones we have now. We have never had any problems with our dogs. We have neighbor children over to our house all of the time without incedent. When a dog is raised with love and compasion the dog will give this back in return. When a dog is raised with hate or neglect you will get hate in return. A person should not own any type of dog unless they are willing to raise them with love and compasion. I also agree that the owners of the dogs should be held responsible for the actions of their dogs. After all it is their falt. In some way their was neglect or abuse involved. Rep. Wesselhoft cleary is trying to make a name for himself at the expense of a wonderful breed of dog.
In Beijing China, they seize large dogs once a year from their loving owners homes. They beat and kill their beloved pets. In Denver, Pit bull owners are losing what they consider family members.
Those that they cannot find a home for, are put to death.
How would you feel if your family member was eutananized because they were seen as dangerous?? Stop this senseless ban Wesselhoft!
I have 2 pit bulls and my parents have 1. They are awesome dogs and we have never had such well trained, well behaived pets. We love them and wouldn't know what we would do without them. All the people who say bad thing about this breed have probaly never owned a pit before. Also for the parents that are so worried about the kids-WATCH THEM!!! You can't expect a child to ever get bit. There are more accidents out there besides dog bites. 9 out of 10 times,a dog bit that happens is from another type of breed. Americans love to hear a crazy story so a small dog like a poodle isn't going to hit the news. TO sum it up,get real, they are way more problems out there besides dog bites and I absolutely love my dogs. Don't ever judge until you own one. How would you feel if someone was wanting to ban your pet that you have had for years? I hope more people sign this. Thank you for everyone on here!!!
I wish people would quit punishing the pitbull breed and start punishing the ignorant owners who mistreat their pits and make them mean. It's not the breed's fault, it's the owners for not being responsible. I have a pitbull kennel and have been around them my whole life, they are wonderful loving dogs. Don't anyone remember when the pitbull was the mascot for the war WWI, because it was a hero. How soon people forget about the good things about pitbulls. Again punidh the deed not the breed!!
I am so tired of hearing about how "pitbulls are viscous attack dogs" A dog acts as to the way in which it was raised. How can people discriminate against a breed of dog or any other animal for that matter. You never hear or other dog attacks from german shepards and other breeds of dogs that happen just as often if not more than pit bull attacks. no doubt there are some bad apples here and there but is this not true with everything in life-humans, animals, plants, hell everyone of gods creatures have a downfall somewhere in the chain. I own several pits myself and never in the 5 years of having them have i had a problem. Leave the dogs alone. place the blame where it belongs on the owner and and quit trying to illegialize and ban pitbulls. It is like trying to ban blacks or whites or hispanics because of several isolated events.I am against any type of ban of pitbulls.
i'm a breeder from texas who think that the breed shouldnt be band for many reason, that all pitbulls aren't aggresive and violent only punish those who are abusing the breed. www.richandrose.cjb.net
For every fatal dog bite in the United States, there are approximately 230,000 dog bites that are not treated by a physician. Out of 5 million dog bites per year, there are 15-20 deaths (see dogbitelaw.com) that is 0.000004% of bites are fatal!
AND THIS GUY WANTS TO MAKE A BREED EXTINCT? ARE YA KIDDING ME?
Just for comparison sake, I thought I'd provide you with some statistics on deaths by drunk drivers.....
In 2003, there were 42,643 fatal traffic accidents, of those 17,013 were alcohol related (see madd.org), that's 40% of the traffic accidents that caused death were alcohol related.
wesselhoft is trying to ban a breed that is used by some police forces in the same role as german shepards. do you think these other police forces around the country would be using pit bulls if they were as bad as wesselhoft is trying to make them sound it is the owners that raise them and the way they are bred(some are very inbred)that make them what they are a good owner and responsible breeder i believe will always have a good well tempered pit bull
my dog is a very good natured companion that i would not want to live without he is a happy dog that loves people. the legislation wesselhoft is pursuing is just wrong punish the deed not the breed
i have a beautiful sweet half pit half amstaff that is my sons favorite playmate he is so good with little children that i was totally taken aback by his gentleness. i have also seen aggressive pits and the difference in those owners and the ones i know with truly sweet good pits is the owner and the amount of attention they get and how they are treated. i beleive the owner is the most influential source for a dogs behavior the cody yelton case is horrible but the owner of those dogs is the problem and not the breed
i have owned 3 pits in my life and never once had an aggression problem with any of them. two of them were raised with my 7 and 4 yr old daughters they are very protective and loving of the girls and their friends as with any dog they dont play in the yard without supervision but i dont have any fear of the dogs with my girls or anyone else. it is truly the breed and not the deed some owners are irresponsible but most are very good people that take great pride in their pits being good loving dogs
i have lived with a roomate that had a pit and a rott they are not bad dogs the accidents that happen with this breed are truly saddening but it is not the dogs in my experience it is how they are raised and treated these dogs when raised lovingly will act just like the very accepted labrador retriever it is the owners responsibility with any dog to make sure they are well socialized dogs and accepting of everyone all dogs can be aggressive.
i own a wonderful pit bull that is great with everyone especially children he plays with them and gaurds them like they are his own his parents are the same way and it is not the breed but the owners
i have a pit bull and an amstaff that are truly the best dogs i have ever owned. the owner of a pit bull is the responsible party in their behavior more than anything else. my dogs had a neighbor dog jump the fence into their yard and they did get into a fight my dogs did not kill this 7 mo old lab puppy she was hurt but not killed and they were alone with her for 10 minutes. this crap about them being killers is a load of bull it is how they are raised and treated. if you beat a child they will beat others if you beat a dog you are teaching them aggression is okay. this breed has been exploited by drugged out losers and the media looking for a story. punish the deed not the breed. i agree these dogs do require a responsible owner and in my experience the vast majority are responsible owners. as for the cody yelton case i know some family members and the story is the father was asleep on the couch when the bite happened. this would have been totally prevented had he just been watching his child like a responsible parent.
I own three dogs. Two are APBT's and one is an SBT. Please look into banning backyard breeders and people who abuse these dogs, not the ones who cherish them for what they are:loyal, couragous, loving, and a great pet with children!
BRILLIANT! Im sure making it illegal to own a Pit Bull will be just as effective as outlawing illegal narcotics has been! In reality this will only make Pit Bulls even more attractive to exactly the kind of people who should not own one. The kind of people who will ignore the law entirely. No problem just build more prisons right rep. Wesselhoft? Whats next? Guns? Just what I would expect from a democrat.???
Where did all the poorly bred Pit Bulls come from anyway? Illegal breeding! Why are the existing laws not inforced now??? I guess writing more useless laws is just easier for rep. Wesselhoft. Again, BRILLIANT.
please dont ban the breed punish the deed!!!! it has been found un constitutional to ban any specific breed of dog....several states recognize this why cant we all
Thank you Paul for all that you have done to help Cody. You have my support. I am Cody's nana and I know the nightmares that my grandson is living with. I just wonder why a man was living with ten pit bull dogs that had not been to the vet. It doesn't matter to Cody if it is the dogs fault or the owner fault. He is paying the price for both of them. For those of you that love your pit bulls I hope they don't turn on you!
Owners are to be blame if they have a vicious dog but not the dog especially the pit bull coz they are really sweet and loving dog. I have a pit bull at home and he sleeps in my room under my bed. He is very friendly to man and animals inlcuding cats. You wanna ask why he's so friendly? because i'm a responsible owner and i trained him to be like that. I hope everybody will realize that dogs only adapt what his owner/trainor thought him to be.
Mr. Wesselhoft you are stereotyping a dog breed but also the people who own this breed. It is not just felons and gang members who own these dogs. Helen Keller owned an American Pit Bull Terrier, John Steinback documents his joys with a pitbull and states that his pitbull was the best pet he ever had. A ban on the pit bull takes away our rights and is one of the most un-american things that our government has considered doing. It is getting a little too big brotherish when our government can tell us what kind of pets we can have. Criminals are not sentenced to death without a trial and a chance to prove their innocence. You have not researched these animals enough to make the descision you are trying to make, and I for one will not remain an Oklahoman if this law passes. I am a homeowner and pay 1600 annually for property taxes and this will be the states loss if this bill is passed
If banning the breed for hearing some news of ferocity and mauling attacks, then are you saying we should also ban humans?
"Seek to understand before being understood."
If you dont know the breed, dont judge it. Ask responsible breeders. Show type pits are friendly, its the body structure that makes them imposing and misunderstood.
Mr. Wesselhoft, your "bandage approach" to a much larger problem is wrong, it is not the "Breed" at fault! Knowledge will make you a great leader, dont' follow...lead! G.P.
They are good pet and very affectionate to people it depends how you raise the dog. Even all big dogs will be harmfull if we dont raise them correctly. Punished the deeds not the breed.
"Learning is the key to understanding"..
its not because youve heard things about some bad dogs (GENERAL). it doesnt mean to say that all the dogs are bad. though there are Some but NOT 'ALL'.
as an Alternative you should Promote "RESPONSIBLE" ownership.. coz its not a the Breed that is BAD its the DEED!..
i love my Dog Cholo.
