I support this petition. Dogs proven to be dangerous/vicious should be regulated, but Wesselhoft's legislation is poorly crafted and does not properly address all dangerous dogs. The pitbull = deadly killer assumption is about as likely a comparison as white Bronco driver = knife wielding Heisman trophy winner. The media has created this equation, and it is only marginally based in reality. Legislation targeting the owners of dangerous dogs (of any breed) is fine, but this form of state-sponsored paternalism is simply unacceptable. I'm sure Wesselhoft's intentions to protect Oklahomans is genuine. Thanks Paul! You can't protect me from gun violence by banning only 9mm handguns from the state. Author some realistic legislation please.

If this entire bill is based on what happened to Cody Yelton in Moore, then why not look at all the facts. Yes, the boy was attacked, which is unfortunate. That part is not debatable. Yet, the owner of the dog that attacked the boy, had two fences I believe. One chain link and one stockade. The boy stuck his hand through BOTH fences trying to reach the dog. As I've said, it IS unfortunate that it happened. But why weren't the parents watching him better? I understand you can't watch children every second of every day, but if they had concerns about the breed of dog living next door, then Cody never should've been left unsupervised to play in the backyard. You're not going after the parents, of any children who have been attacked, for not watching them. Why go after the dogs? It's stupid and violates our rights as citizens in a free country. No one will force me, or any of my friends, to get rid of our dogs. They are a part of our families.

My former neighbors had a very aggressive male sharpei. This story is important, so bear with me. I was babysitting my nephew one day and he ran out front ahead of me with my dog to get in the car, as we were getting ready to leave. The sharpei came out of nowhere and charged my nephew. He would've gotten ahold of my nephew if my dog hadn't jumped in and grabbed that sharpei by the jugular. Now, does that mean that my australian shepard/blue heeler mix needs to be banned from Oklahoma? Because she happened to be the only thing that saved my nephew from being attacked by that other dog? Animal control had been called to my neighbors house for this dog several times over recent weeks, because he was truly a neighborhood menace. I don't blame the dog; I blame the owners. They didn't deserve to have a dog. They have since moved and I don't know what has become of the animal, but the point is this... Pits aren't the only breed that attack. Almost every breed of dog has a specific thing they were bred for, whether it's hunting rabbits and deer, to herding livestock. All these animals have it in them to be aggressive and attack. Why not ban every breed altogether, just "in case" something "might" happen "in the future"?

I support this petition. I have two pit bull mixes right now and my four year old niece lives with me. I've never had a problem with them showing aggression towards her, myself, or any person that is in my house. The only way I can see that my dogs would ever attack someone is if they felt that I, or someone in my family, was in danger. And, in that case, it isn't THEIR fault. It'd be whoever was trying to break into my house's fault. Don't ban a wonderful breed due to lack of intelligence in the media, the general public and the political offices.

I've been around pits my entire life, and have never had a problem with any of them. They are a wonderful breed which has wrongfully been singled out by the media, legislatures and other idiots in this state. I, personally, know of other breeds who have attacked people. So, go right on ahead... The pits have been singled out because they're medium sized and bred for strength. If you want to ban dogs like that, because of what "might" or "could" happen "in the future", why not ban the rottweilers, german shepards, golden retrievers, labs, border collies etc etc

Banning them isn't the answer, because they aren't the problem. Instead of putting the pits into quarantine and euthanizing them, why not do the same to the humans that have trained them to fight and be mean?

I support this petition.I've owned pit bulls all my life and have never had a problem with them.I love my dog and think it is unfair to people that own a good pit with great bloodines that were breed for good temperments to not be able to have there dog to love there dog and show it a good life. It really upsets me that I've seen more agresive labs than I have pits and people want to band pits. It's a sad world when you band one of gods creation because of someone else mastakes. Please put higher fines and prison time not jail time or probation to people that fight or mistreat pits. Don't punish inocent families.

I like Pitbulls. They happen to be small and strong and relatively easy to breed; so, naturally their falling into a sort of social trap/niche is not surprising. I've known several pit bulls and all of them were lovely pets. Wesselhoft -- as political ideologues tend to do -- is ignoring the societal issues at the core of dog-fighting. MANY dogs were bred to fight animals much larger than themselves... Konondors (bear fighters/hunters), Rhodesian Ridgebacks (lion hunters) etc. etc. etc.

This is our american history, And you nor anybody can take that away! you can try all you want! but you will see people will find other ways! This is unconstutional! you need to focuse on the people that can't take care of these dogs and go after them! so what's next rottweiler's mastif's chow's german shepards! There are currently 20+ breeds that can be mistaken for a 'pit bull'. The novice eye cannot tell the difference. 'Pit bull' is not a breed, but a slang for three breeds. All of these breeds were originally bred to capture wild hogs and bulls for their owners. Any human aggression has been bred out of these dogs for the past 150 years. My American Pit Bull Terrier is the most gentle, loving dog I have ever owned. Over my lifetime, I have owned a Collie, a Lab, a Chihuahua, a Brussels Griffon, and an Affenpinscher. I'll take my "pit bull" over any other breed. It is all in the way you teach and supervise them. If my sweet 'pit bull' is banned in Oklahoma, I'll leave the state. I've lived here for 40 years, but nothing will make me give up my dog!

We need to focus on enforcing the laws we already have and regulating ignorant dog owners who only have the dog because it is a "fad" or they are using them to fight etc...It's the owners we should make accountable with harsher fines and punishments for animal cruelty!!! It doesn't matter what breed of dog it is...what scares me is the ignorance of humans.

I support this petition. As an former owner of both a pit bull and another exotic pet deemed "dangerous", the so-called "phasing out" of these animals is heartbreaking. Our animal was properly caged, and neighbors were notified in accordance with state laws and not a soul was harmed. Of course the little boys parents are upset, however logic and rationale should be used in making this decision, not emotions and personal grievances.

I truly believe that Pit bulls are a very dangerous breed. I have seen the most friendly of them turn into vicious animals. I do however believe there should be a law on how to house the breed as well as all other breeds, but it is not our right to completely ban the breed from the state. We are not God, it is not our right to make a choice on whether a breed exists or not. If everyone takes this stance on the ban we will wipe out the entire breed. That is Godly and none of us on this planet have that title.

Here is another thing - it is not a dog biting issue. The issue is what happens when a Pit Bull bites compared to any other dog. Deny the facts if that is what you want to do, but no dog kills more than the pit bull. Again, deny it all you want but it is a fact.

John Smith said 01/12/06, 6:37 pm (verified)
You can blame bad owners all you like. The Pit Bull kills. The media wouldn't care about Pit Bulls if they didn't kill 16 people in 2005 alone. Make all the excuses you want, the Pit Bulls are getting pushed out and the general public is safer for it.
