In our schools currently, most students are not exposed to a foreign language until around the seventh grade. Many do not even continue it through twelfth grade. This limited foreign language instruction has resulted in few students being able to speak and read a foreign language with a useful degree of fluency. In essence then, this instruction has little long term value to them.

In virtually every other country, students are fluent in two or more languages. Here in the United States, in our infinite egotism, we seek to be accommodated, rather than to accommodate. This affects how we are viewed in the international forum. As we are not an island, we would be more competitive and our lives would be richer if we had a greater ability to communicate with our neighbors.

Furthermore, educational studies have shown that children are more receptive and readily able to learning a new language at a younger age. This is because language patterns and structures are not so deeply engrained in their psyche. Because of this, they pick up new languages quicker and more easily.

yeah, y'know? so true. i'm an american, but i'm mexican too, but you know, if you learn a language at an early age, it's more likely to be incorperated into your mind as natural, you're more fluent at it. this is my third year of spanish class, and i'm still pretty bad at spanish speaking! i'd probably be a little more natural at the language if i learned earlier.

In Britain a new project has been launched to have Esperanto taught in primary schools as an encouraging introduction to the study of traditional languages in secondary schools. The United Nations should support it. Please read the website: www.springboard2languages .org/

I think it would be a good idea for younger kids to get a foreign language education. We as a nation have fallen behind many nations in knowledge of language and customs, and it is very sad. The younger kids would learn to appreciate culture and language, the better off we would be as a nation.

I feel it is very important to learn at least two foreign languages. If we learned other people's languages we will better understand their culture. My father, for example, speaks Euskara (Basque), Spanish, and English, and my mother speaks English, Spanish, and some Maori words. If we teach younger children new languages they will surely become more culturally aware of their world. I support this 100%.
