One of my animal companions is a "retired" pit fighter. I rescued her as a starving stray covered in bloody wounds. She is by far the sweetest dog I have ever known. She is very sensitive and only wants to please all humans she is around, especially children. I obedience trained her without one single treat. She is so grateful to have a life with violence, aggression, or pain. Should she be killed because of what "so-called civilized" humans have done to her? Look at her picture on www.heartsofgoldpitrescue .petfinder.com. Her name is Merci. GREED and IGNORANCE on the part of the human race is the ONLY problem we have with the pit bulls that are bad - point the finger in the right direction. {Hearts of Gold Pit Rescue, Memphis, Tennessee}
I live with a pit bull and my cat and 2 birds. The pit bull, Daisy Mae, is the sweetest dog I have ever met. I used to be afraid of dogs, but I have since changed my mind because of how gentle Daisy Mae the pure bread Pit Bull is. Pit bulls are not bad dogs. They are as good or as bad as any other dog depending upon the training that they receive.
I have a pure bread pit bull that I have had since she was 6 weeks old. She is the most gentle dog I have ever owned. She has never barked at, growled at or bit any person or child. She loves people, cats and other dogs. She is truly a gentle soul.
I have had many different breeds of dogs and this my first pit bull, to mine and probably everyone elses suprise she is the most gentle of all dogs that I have owned. I had a Germand Shepherd Collie that would bite at anyone who moved to quickly.
Pit bulls are not inherently bad dogs, they are strong dogs and only with a bad owner behind the dog is the dog a menace. ** JUST LIKE ANY OTHER BREED OF DOG!!!**
I have owned pit bulls before. I have one right now. This dog wouldnt hurt anything. In fact she loves nd protects my 1 1/2yr old nephew. Pit Bulls are awesome, loyal, sweet affectionate dogs. People need to stop putting them in a bad light because of the owners. Any dog can bite.
Breed Banning is Prejudice!! We are a society who is supposed to be teaching morals and values. No one can justify breed banning, without banning other aspects of life. Alot of men rape and injure women and children(no offense men) but because of those select men, should ALL men be percieved as bad?? We need to stop thinking that death is the only solution. Education to the general public and stronger penalties to animal abusers will help.
Death is NOT a solution!!! Do not support this. Please show everyone that these dogs need our help now more then ever!
I know many gentle pitbulls. Their owners are gentle. That just about sums it up. Should there be a mishap, make the owner accountable and then move on from there.
Punish the deed, not the breed. There are no bad dogs, only bad owners...go after the criminal cretans that abuse, neglect and torture their dogs (no matter what he breed)and start to protect the innocent dogs that are being used & tortured by these creeps.
Pitbulls are not born aggressive, they are trained to be aggressive by bad people; just as many other breeds of dogs can be trained to be aggressive. Go after the owners!!
When I worked as a dog groomer I came in contact with pitbulls occassionaly and they were all very sweet dogs. There is nothing bad about the breed, it is all in how people who acquire them treat them and train them. I say PUNISH THE DEED....NOT THE BREED. Protect the pitbulls from ignorant people. I have an American Staffordshire Mix who is the most gentle and sweetest dog I have ever had. It isn't fair if he gets a bad rap just because of his pitbullish appearance. Please educate the public about these dogs.
There is no such thing as a "bad" dog or a "bad" breed.
To paraphrase a statement made by Andy Rooney, "Most of these dogs are nicer than most people I meet."
It is unfortunate that the actions of irresponsible individuals have resulted in a negative sterotype of a breed. A pit bull, like any other dog, will do what it is TRAINED to do. The responsibility lies with the owners; not with the dogs.
REFER TO POST 1376 AKA STEPHANIE WOLFE IT EXPLAINS IT ALL RIGHT THERE! THE BEST BREED I HAVE EVER OWNED AND LOVED! MY FAMILY LOVES THEM ALSO AND THEY LOVE MY FAMILY WITH THE UPMOST RESPECT AND CARE.
PUNISH THE DEED NOT THE BREED
When our first dog died two months ago, we went out looking for a dog, thinking we would get something along the lines of a boxer. Which is when we found Moony, our Pit Bull/Lab mix puppy. I can't imagine owning any other breed now.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM A PIT BULL?
• High levels of exercise EVERY DAY
• A wonderful family dog
• A very “people loving” dog
• A dog that can be destructive to furniture or other objects if left alone
• An easy to train dog that can make a wonderful partner in agility, jogging, or other activities
• May not get along with other dogs, especially of the same sex
• A dog that you cannot leave unattended with other dogs, no matter how well they get along
• A pet that you may be unable to take to off-leash dog parks
• A poor guard dog; it is not a breed trait to be defensive of car, home, etc.
• A social dog; most pit bulls greet strangers like long lost friends
• A healthy dog that is not especially prone to many genetic diseases
• A 12 + year commitment
• A dog that you may be unable to travel with due to breed specific restrictions
• Criticism from friends/family members that are misinformed about the breed
• A dog that requires high quality food to maintain health
• Vet bills for regular check ups, spay/neuter, vaccinations, and flea and other parasite treatments
• A dog that is safe with people. Human aggression, severe shyness, and instability are not traits typically found in Pit bulls. Pit Bulls with these traits are not good representatives of the breed and should not be placed into homes.
Pit Bull Myths
• MYTH: All Pit Bulls are mean and vicious.
It is reported on temperament tests conducted by the American Temperament Test Society that Pit Bulls had a passing rate of 95% -- compared to only 77% of the general dog population. (Beagles scored 78.2%, and Golden Retrievers scored 83.2%) These temperament tests consist of putting a dog through a series of unexpected situations, some involving strangers. Any signs of unprovoked aggression or panic in these situations result in failure of the test. The achievement of Pit Bulls in this study disproves that they are inherently aggressive to people. Why can't you kill a sqirrel on a tv show, without animal rights activists getting all upset? We can ban a breed of dog , thet knows nothing baout what it's done to be banned, yet no ne does anything about it.
Growing up I never had any contact with a pit bull(s) so all of the things I had heard in the media was the only thing I had to go by. Like so many people I thought they were the devil's right hand man but guess what.....I did my research when I decided to add a dog to our family and it was a no brainer.....Boomer the American Pit Bull is now part of our family.
I agree, though i don't own a Pit Bull I have yet to meet one that showed any signs of agression towards anyone, and these dogs are in homes with children!
It not fair to judge a whole breed based on some. It is how they are raised that causes the problem, not the actual breed or dog. Show the truth about Pit Bulls.
I am shocked at how outrageous the media has become about portraying pit bulls in a bad light. As a business owner working with animals on a daily basis I have come across many pit bulls. In the right home they make outstanding pets. A pit bull is part of our family as well and I come across many people who have changed their minds about the breed from just meeting "Pete". These people think this way from how the media has portrayed this breed thus far. I want to do what I can to help these poor creatures overcome the unbelievable odds that are against them.
