TV stories can be especially helpful when perception is so out of touch with reality, as on this issue. My rescued dog is probably greyhound and maybe pit, who knows. She is such a good soul that she now visits an Alzheimers facility twice a month.
We educated ourselves about pit bulls before rescuing ours from a Boston shelter, and have found her to be the most loving, wonderful family pet. People are always surprised to learn she's a pitbull--the loving dog they meet is nothing like their pre-conceived notion of what a pitbull is.
My family owned two rescued Pit Bulls when I was a child. Both were rehabilitated former fighting dogs. They were awesome with us children. Great family dogs.
Any breed of dog has the potential to bite. Pit Bulls and other "macho" breeds just seem to always fall into the hands of irresponsible owners.
All breeds of dogs need proper socialization and obendience training from puppyhood to adulthood. They need caring, loving families.
Education is what the public needs, not sensationalist journalism. We need to educate people, not needlessly ban noble breeds of dog.
Thank you for your time.

It would be nice to show the other side of these wonderful dogs for a change. Let people see the real pit bulls and not just the ones ruined by their irresponsible owners, who are the real threat to society!
I own two pitbulls and I agree with all the positive comments made in this petition supporting this breed. The media has traditionally portrayed pitbulls as violent and aggressive. The negative media spin and biased publicity against our beautiful loving breed must stop.
The APBT are great loyal, loving dogs.I've had plenty of them around my family over the years, and never had i had a problem with them.It all depeneds how u raise them.
In the statistical sciences, there is a phenomenon known as "reporting bias." Reporting bias occurs when certain events are reported more often than their true incidence or prevalence. Despite the mainstream media’s fixation on the putative “aggressiveness” of pit bulls, peer-reviewed veterinary literature of a nationwide scope unequivocally demonstrates that pit bulls are not statistically more likely to bite or cause injury than any other breed. A brief anecdote will illustrate the harmful effects of reporting bias. A friend of mine was viciously attacked by an unleashed brown lab while jogging, requiring hundreds of stitches and multiple reconstructive surgeries. He called the media and said he had been viciously attacked by a brown lab, but they were not interested. Just for kicks, he called back the next day pretending to be a different person who had been attacked by a pit bull but not seriously injured. Four news trucks were there within the hour. This demonstrates that the media’s interest is not truly in the promotion of public safety, but in conjuring up fear and prejudice where no real threat exists. Please reconsider this approach – thank you.
My daughter has a pitbull named, "Piggy", who has been a very loving dog. She adopted him as an adult dog, spent alot of time with him and had him trained. He is a big "lap" dog now.
I've been familiar with pit bulls in responsible homes for about 8 years now, and they are gentle loving animals. It's the people who mistreat and mistrain them who are the problem.
No more vicious than golden retrievers, beagles or other popular dogs! In a recent study of 122 dog breeds by the American Temperament Testing Society (ATT), pit bulls achieved a passing rate of 83.9%. That's as good or better than beagles ... 78.2%, and golden
retrievers ... 83.2%. So before you judge them actually do the homework!!
The APBT is a loving caring breed. They were bred for years to love people. All of my dogs are Canine Good Citizens and are true breed ambasadors. They are also one of the top passing dogs in the American Temperment Testing Societys testing. They have a higer pass ratio then Labs, Boxers, and poodle's.
please consider this request....
I have owned breeds which fall under the "pit Bull " stereo type for over 20 years and it is not because they are natural born killers.
I have made over 100 nursing home visits with one of my current dogs, and let me just say a photo is worth a thousand words. I think a positive film clip would be worth a million words.
People need to educated on responsible dog owners and ownership. Some of the horrific living conditions which create the media stories about this breed should also be exposed.
Thanks
Holly
These dogs are taught to be aggressive by abusive and ignorant owners. I have owned two pitbulls, and both were sweet, well-rounded animals. Both were very obidient, and fun loving. It's ashame that the whole breed be blamed for how a few owners mistreat and mistrain their pitbulls. In all honesty, a poodle can be vicious! Get real...
It is the cruel owners who ruin these dogs. People who try to make them agrressive by being very cruel to them. The dog fighting business in this si called civilized country is a disgrace. Law Enforcement all but ignores it but it goes hand in hand with drugs and illegal gambing. There must be laws against the PEOPLE who maltreat these animals NOT the dogs.
I am the very proud owner/ mother to a 5-year-old Pit bull named Diamond. She is the sweatiest, kindest and loving dog I have ever known. I am tired of every time I walk down the street people look at her and then look at me. I am tired of the way the Media portrays them as being aggressive and mean, ANY DOG and I do mean ANY dog can be aggressive. It is all in how you raise them.
People need to learn more about the breed, especially these people out there that want to have them Banned from cities and States. I am sure more then ½ of the people that want to see Pit’s cease to exist have never even owned one or have ever even been around one, but have jumped on the bandwagon. The key to knowing and understanding any breed of dog is called education! Before anyone can speak on something, know what you are talking about! So to everyone out here that thinks you know how a Pit Bull is because you have watched and Segment on the news or read a story in the paper, Take a few moments of your time and spend some time with one. You will see they are not all the media hypes them up to be, they are sweet, loving and gentle just like any other dog.
Public education is very important.. not only does it inform people but it also will hopefully help others who have no knowledge or experience on these dogs to understand them better.. This is important.. Instead of bashing the Pit Bull's of America, educate about them.. After all they are known as the American's Dog.. When will we stand by the ones know stod by us.. Please do this.. it would mean a lot to many people..
I own Rottweilers and have fostered Pitbulls......Like Children.....they are what you TEACH them. Blame ignorant owners, people wanting pits for all the wrong reasons. Don't blame the BREED. I find Pits to be very loving, intelligent dogs, more so than some of the idiots that appear in the bad news stories that own the dogs that get the headlines.
to band pit bull's as a hole is crazy. why don't we find out the highest race of crimianl's and band them??? this is absolutly insane!!!!! I have three pit bulls and they are the most friendly, trust worhty dog's any body has ever seen!!!
It's irresponsible ownership that creates bad dogs - and this applies to ALL breeds, it's just that pits are the only ones that wind up on the news. They truly don't deserve the reputation the media has given them.
I own three rotties and a rott-pit mix> I have worked with literally thousands of rottweilers and pitbulls in the last 7 years. Owning a strong, dominant dog is about setting your dog up to succeed. My rotts and my rott-pit are canine good citizens. One of my rotties is a therapy dog and little old ladies in nursing homes LOVE him.
Banning a breed does nothing but further propegate fear by the media. There is no shortage of potentials for the next "bad breed."
Instead of banning a breed, encourage responsible ownership, reward good behavior (both ownership and individual dogs) an d encourage spay/neuter of animals, so there isn't an overpopulation of animals falling into the wrong hands and irresponsible owners. As the saying goes: Punish the deed, not the breed. You wouldn't say "all men are car thieves" because one was apprehended stealing a car. Generalizing a breed does the same thing.
My niece has a pitbull who is a wonderful sweet boy. It is nice to see how great this breed is, when owned and loved by responsible and knowledgeable people.
Fox News' motto is to be fair and balanced. I watch fox because I feel it gives most people the benefit of the doubt. I feel it will be a perfect spot to show that there should be no breed specific legislation and that there are no inherently bad breeds. Pit bulls and Rotties, unfortunately, get into bad situations because they are owned by the 'wrong crowd'. They are oftentimes either trained to be bad or they are abused or neglected, which, in turn, will make them bad. It truly is the old question of nature versus nurture, and we know that most dispositions are influenced by nurture. It is anti American to judge based on ethnicity or religion, why is it acceptable to judge a dog based on its breed. Accountability (and fines) on the owners part is what is necessary. Do not punish the masses for the actions of a few.
I am a proud owner of a Pittie that is a Canine Good Citizen and certified Thearpy dog. They are so wonderful when given love. I also foster pitties, as we lovingly call them and have NEVER had the issues that are so in the headlines lately. "PITBULL ATTACKS, what above the Lab that attacks as well???"
Irresponsible journalism is when you only report one side of the problem. Please stop sensationalizing "pit bull attacks." This type of reporting only add to their misconceptions!
Breeds are not responsible for the mistreatment that they receive from PEOPLE. There is no such thing as a bad breed, just bad and irresponsible owners.
I have a pit bull mix, and she is the sweetest and most loving dog. She hasn't been trained to fight, so she doesn't. Please do a documentary or segment to expose these regulatory zealots who are trying to ban APBTs. Besides further infringing on civil liberties and bringing more unwelcome government control to our lives, this ban won't solve the aggressive dog problem, which crosses breeds and is more about the owners than the dogs.
would love to see some positive media on these dogs I have a whole yard full of these dogs and on is friendlier than the next.it is all in how they are raised.
As an obedience instructor I can tell you that I see more dogs in the sporting breed groups for biting than pit bulls or other breeds deemed "dangerous", the difference it doesnt get reoprted. Please be responsible and not get into sensationalism. Funny I didnt hear anyone mention that the dog who recently saved her owner by dialing 911 was a ROTTWEILER, but god forbid if it was a bite the headlines would have read "another Pitbull or rottwieler attack once again". Its a shame what a disjustice the media has done to certain breeds.
i think all of you people need to quit acting like a bunch of kids fighting theste dogs in the streets neighborhoods and just were ever they feel they can make a dollar....so all you true dogmen and women you better take a look at whats going on around you there trying to take our breed of dogs away and dont none of you give a damn.....
fear is dangerous and doesn't result in good policy. It's about time we took our lead from experts in human/canine interaction rather than the six o'clock news. I hope Fox News will take the lead in responsible fact based reporting.
pourquoi prendre le problème à l'envers c'est chien ne sont pas plus méchants que certaines autres races il faut des maîtres à la hauteur de leur éducation
