I don't think any breed should be banned, and I think the push to ban pits is totally based on hype not actual statistics. My roomate has 2 pits I have grown to love very much.
i have a staffordshire pitbull terrier dog, and he is the most loving and loyal dog i have ever had. i have also had american staffordshire pitbull terriers, and they were the most loving dogs i have ever had. my present dog, beau, the staff. terrier, is a small but sturdy dog, and is never aggressive to humans, and i trust him more with my four year old daughter than i do a baby sitter. we have had him for over a year now, and not once has he growled or shown the least bit of aggression toward my daughter, even though she pulls his ears, tail and on his legs, he just licks her in the face and takes it. a german shepherd i had nearly took her hand off when she pulled his ear, so if you are going to do a story on a ban, do it on all breeds of dogs, and bring up the statistics of the dog bite ratio within the breeds, and you will see that pitbull breeds are on the lower half, if not the very bottom.
I can't imagine life without my dog Freddy....He has taught me so much about loyalty and steadfastness and compassion....not to mention goofiness and playfulness and the art of being a couch-potato....
Pit Bulls are wonderful dogs I owns many of them and they are a very loving breed. It is not the dog who is mean its the person who raises the dog who is mean.
Pits are sweet, loving dogs and I'm convinced that my grandmother lived as long as she did due to the companionship she developed with my dog, Champ, a pit. They were best friends!
i love my pitbulls, my cats and WE almost DIED trying to save them Nov 7th 2004 when our kennel and house burnt down, the cats ran right to the kennel where it was on fire trying to get inside as did we, i would do it again in a second. (roughhousekennels.com)
The facts are that the Bully Breeds have fine
temperaments and are not human-aggressive by nature. Breed specific legislation
against the Bully Breeds and other breeds is not the answer. It is easy enough to identify
the steps that need to be taken to curb the dog bite problem and intensifying a dog holocaust is
not one of them!
I am from the Philippines.. We love pitbulls here. We strongly feel that it is a mistake to ban them anywhere in the world. I rather not own a dog if it is not a pitbull.. SBK Kennels
Like any dog, they aim only to please. If an owner has bad thooughts, the dog picks up on them and acts out, trying to win approval. It's always about the owners, never the dogs
As owner of a dog grooming shop, I come in contact with nearly 100 dogs per week. I have to say that I have NEVER met a pit bull that I didn't absolutely adore. These dogs are never aggressive, defensive, or ANYTHING but loving and playful. It is the few irresponsible owners that deserve the bad rap that wrongly looms over this breed.
Pits, like any breed of dog are products of their environment. Those who come from an aggressive home will tend to be more aggressive. Those from a kind, loving home will follow that exampls. I have known several playful, cuddly pits who are great family pets. Blame the owners not the dog.
I invite you to a Channel City Kennel Club meeting where the Pit Bulls/AmStaffs, and all other breeds interact, and people here love this breed, because they see what they really are, as should you.
I am a very proud owner of pit bulls who are the epitome of the ultimate family dogs. My children can literally take the food from their mouths. They are an example of the majority not the minority!
As with any large or assertive breed, pit bulls should have a good foundation in obedience and be well socialized from the time they are puppies. While there is a tendency for some to be aggressive with other dogs, they are no more so than other breeds with the same historical function, and, in fact were bred to work nicely with humans. Those who remember "The Little Rascals" will note that "Petey" was the Pit Bull who had a bullseye painted over his eye and frolicked with the Spanky, Alfalfa and the gang. Any large dog can bite, and do damage. Owners need to be responsible and held accountable, but banning a particular breed will just encourage those who wish to keep aggressive animals to cross-breed or import less well known breeds from other countries. Even veterinarians and trainers have a hard time identifying breed mixtures sometimes, so it is unlikely that this kind of legislation will have the effect intended. Fox should speak to people like Sue Sternberg, who is actually doing something to encourage inner city youth to commit their dogs to pulling contests instead of dog fights. Now that's a creative solution. Once sport replaces fighting as something to bet on or get "pumped" over, the need to breed for or encourage aggressiveness would disappear.
If people think pitbulls are agressive they are Crazy if you look you will see that a LAB-can do just as much harm or more as a pitbull can do.I believe if people would respect the dog and breed and raise them right then they are great pets, moneymakers, familylo vers and so on.Im a pitbull raiser myself out of portland,TN and all of the dogs i have are HARMLESS loving pets.People that scratch there dogs,or abuse them or use them for protection on drug deals and so on make the dogs mean toward other people and animals.Pitbulls are just like Boardercollies they were really bred for farm dogs, rounding up animals on farms.Farmers use to use them to get there cattle up from the lot and they used them for strength and smartness if the dog could grave a hold of a wild bull by the nose and hang on they were good dogs thats how they got the name PITBULL they are terrfic animals we just need to get the people that is doing wrong with the breed to stop using and treating them the wrong way. People make these dogs crazy!not the dog itsself.
Pitbulls are great creatures. Loving, Playful and very eager to make their parents happy. Unfortantely some people who shouldnt even be allowed to own a worm, have been abusing these great animals and ruining their name.
I have 3 and will never not have any its the owners that train them to do wrong, there the sweetes animals I've ever owned and would not trade the for anything in the world my kids Love them and so do they my kids come to think of it there my kids too.
Pitbulls are wonderful pets. They are no more dangerous than any other breed. It seems like there has always been a breed that is considered dangerous. I remember when it was the German Shepherd, Doberman or Rotweiler. It's people who make them dangerous.
As a veterinarian, I never had problem working with Pitbulls. They are good patients, and great donors for blood transfusions. There are another breeds such as Chow-Chow that alot of them are agressive with people.
It is a shame that these dogs cannot be given respect they deserve like Humans do! You cannot blame the dogs for what they are... Honestly .. it is the Owners that shud be blamed for the way the dogs are trained and raised. I have seen so many of these dogs being mistreated badly because they aren't what they shud be ... it is a shame they can't live like normal dogs... Shame on the Owners for having no self respect and also having no respect to Humanity as well .. cause ALL LIVING THINGS SHUD BE TREATED EQUAL... WITH RESPECT!!
My theory is if you believe that all pit bulls are vicious then you also belive that all black men are gang members and that all italian men are mobsters and all mexican men are drug dealers or users and all white men are alcholics. Is this the way you think? Is this the way america thinks? I sure as hell hope not!!
How can people declare that an entire breed is dangerous and/or vicious? On this premises if a black man from Kentucky robbed you then all black men from Kentucky are bad!
Pit bulls are the greatest dogs alive when owned by responsible people. They are extremely intelligent, eager to please, thrive on human affection, have a great sense of humor and are lots of fun. I will never be "pitless!"
These types of dogs are nothing to be afraid of. In fact they are very sweet and loving animals as long as they are not taught to be violent just like any other dog. It isn't the animals fault for what it has become because of what the owner did. Any owner of any type dog should be held responsible 100% for any violent action the animal may take (unless protecting the family from a night burgler). They are truly a good dog to have and banning them is not the answer to this problem. The answer is to discipline the owner who taught the animal to be so violent!
Its the owners that should be held fully responsible. The dogs only know what we teach them.Just like our children. If we teach them to be criminals then they will become criminals. We are responsible for our minor children and it should be the same with our animals. Of any breed. Some of the meanest dogs I know are yorkies and cocker spaniels.
My husband and I are breeders and there is no way to express the impact these dogs have made on our lives. If there is any way for us to help with this petion (or others) please contact me!
I owned 2 pitbulls for 4 years and both were wonderful dogs, they were excellent with my 2 children who would climb all over them and pull on them and neither dog showed any aggression, they were the sweetest dogs I'd ever had the pleasure of being around.
We train or do not train the animals. Where is the owners responsiblity. We are suppose to be the smart mammal. Instead we are blaming an animal for the destruction we have taught them.
I am a pitbull breeder and I think it is a great idea. It is about time that the people know the real truth about pitbulls. How sweet and loving they can be with the right owners.
